I have a phenom II x3 720 @ 3.3GHz as backup.
had my rig set up to take bulldozer on release, so sat here with the Asus M5A99X EVO AMD 990X board, waiting to see if piledriver is any better

I have an ASUS motherboard that unlocks any socket A chip placed into it. Had an XP 2400 running at 2400 MHz.
Just let the motherboard do its thing & did not overclock nor change or play around with other settings but will try that. Thanks

Just because yours can do that doesn't mean everyone else's can.
1.4V at 3.8GHZ used to be the norm stable.
1.3v at stock speeds has always been perfectly fine.
Yeah but he's on 1.4v at stock clocks, which is too high.

You could have been less vague by "Drop volts" and not gave a screenshot that the majority of Phenom II's will never achieve (Which, he may think is the norm, sets his Phenom II up like that and no POST/BSOD)
Although IIRC 1.4v was some Phenom II's stock volts ; Phenom II 965 C3's (My 1.4 VID couldn't do 4GHZ, but my 1.375 VID could)
EDIT : With the maturity of the process, I concur it's "high", but don't be vague
, I'd settle for 1.35v then work my way overclocking it.

Is it not possible that the extra juice is required to make the unlocked cores stable?
Why? 1.4v is absolutely fine as long as its not running to warm.
Edit, my mistake, yes... for stock that's way to high... drop your volts

Its always going to be best to have your voltage at the minimum required to run. Just because 1.4 is okay, if its possible to run it at less, You generally should.
But like I said before, its possible its requiring the extra due to it being unlocked now.
