AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

Why are people so hung up on which "team" is winning and defending them to the death if they are behind?

Shouldn't you just be sitting on the fence, buying what's best for you when you need to upgrade then getting on with your life rather than posting 1000s of posts about X being better than Y?

So.... all this about AMD having a 6 month lead... or that the first Polaris cards could be out in two months. Doesn't look likely, does it.

This isn't the first time they've said "back to school 2016". A much, much earlier article was doing the rounds last year, pointing to the same release window.

So unless nV aren't releasing until 2017, it's going to be close. Ultimately it doesn't matter if AMD have had working silicon for months now, if they choose not to release until August/September, they aren't going to beat nV to the market.

But then, AMD always seem to manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

They said it will be released BEFORE the back to school period, that's anywhere from now until then.. It maybe a obfuscation on AMD's part to not give an exact time frame for the competition.

Purchase justification?

The implication is obviously that AMD wasn't some cheap two-end laptops out this summer with their new Polaris GPU in them, that certainly doesn't mean they will be out soon

I don't even.....

wtf is a two end laptop

Precisely, it's a investor relations style, if we say March 8th and release on March 12th they'll fry us but the main thing the shareholders need to know is will we make it into all the new models for mid/late summer, yes.

If they released the midrange/high end Polaris today, a lot of them would still only get into new laptops in mid summer because that is the time the likes of Dell release new laptops, which is why it's also important to have stock shipping by then. AMD is just confirming they won't miss the most important sales period.

I wouldn't be surprised now to see low end in March, enthusiast 300-350mm^2 part June maybe, either moving to 10nm in 2017 or a big 14nm part early 2017. Nvidia, midrange Sept, low end 2017, big 14nm or mid 10nm mid 2017.

You do get that is precisely the point right, they weren't ready to show Pascal.

Time line of events, getting silicon back > being ready to show the silicon to people > being ready to show a working demo > being ready to send out samples to reviewers > release.

Many companies have somewhat misled people over how close they were to release something before, most companies don't hold something up pretending it's one thing when it's something else.

Tell me what Nvidia had to gain by showing a fake product, the ONLY gain they have is making people believe they were closer than they really were. No one cares if you don't hold up something. It's common to talk about a preproduction product and not have something to show, it's common to hold up a finished product to say "hey, this will be available really soon". Most of the time the reason for holding up a fake version of a product is to mislead people.

Should we mention wood screws? Nvidia held up a fake product and said hey, this WILL be out before the end of the year. IT launched what, 6 months later, well after they said it was. The only reason to hold up the fake was to reinforce that lie that it would be released soon... it turned out to be a lie and it also wasn't released as soon as they said.

I think he was well aware what he was holding up. I guess when all is said and done one only need to look at how much AMD is currently worth and wait for the penny to drop. Holding up conceptual products is nothing new DM, but when the mood suits you I'm sure you'd openly admit that. However this is NVIDIA, isn't it.
