AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

hi guys just a quick question about my 3.2GHZ AMD® Phenom™ II
I have a good case with good ventilation and with a n arctic pro freezer v2 and my idle temps are around 42-46c and under load with prime go up too 61c.
this can't be normal can it ?

Is it completely at stock settings? not unlocked not overclocked?

If so that does seem pretty high.

What thermal paste are you using?

I bought my 965 system with the arctic 7, at stock running intel test was seeing 70 degrees + over with reboots, turns out the cooler is just plain pants. Worse than the stock cooler. Now i have a Scythe mugen 2, its running happily at 3.8ghz+ and stays below 50 deg on load!

yeah its totaly stock im using some cheap alaska paste but still didnt think it should be this high ?

maybe i should try some silver compound ?

My GFX card seems a little high too ... ??

What is the temp under voltage ?

can some one recommend me the best coolers and thermal paste please.

i presume vin1 is your vcore voltage, thats why the temps are so high.

If you not clocking, try dropping it down to stock and work down from there so see how low it will go.

Phenom II 965 BE (4012 MHz stable)

After rebuilding my system over the weekend due to the previously mentioned 'leak' I've FINALLY got just over 4GHz stable :D

I had a 15 hour run done (with Prime95 & IBT) this morning but with rushing for work forgot to take the bloody screeny.

Oddly regardless of voltage neither the HT or CPU-NB will do 2.6GHz, sometimes maybe its better to be grateful for what you've got than try & push that little bit TOO far.

(I wish my C3 stepping was 1 of the lower Vcore models not 1.4volts...lol)

Not bad, bit high temps/volts for 24/7 use I'd say tho : ).
Would much rather do 3.8 @ stock volts on 965.

Remember the NB/HT clock adds up with FSB as well so if you use this high FSB and set it to 2600 it will end up with 3000+ ! Maybe that's why it wont boot ?
Tried lower fsb and higher multi instead ?

Just done half hour on Prime but it bores me, will set it to go longer when I'm out.

For now, 3.825Ghz @ 225x17 / 1.475 / 1.3, NB/HT x11 @ 2475Mhz / DDR2 900 6-6-6-18.

Temp seem high still after fitting a CM 212+ w/ AS5, maybe it needs a week to settle in, although I havn't opened a window or put my case fans on full yet so maybe there's a degree or two there.

I had tried for 4.01 @ 18x223 / 1.5 / 1.35 but it failed Prime after a few minutes.

Any advice on what to work on next? and also what is Load Line Calibration in simple terms!?

I just set the load line to 16 or 19 and forget about it.

It basically is a method of eliminating vdroop. It ensures that the supply of voltage to the cpu under load is not less than at idle. I think 16 actually gives it a tiny bit more.

Do a bit of testing to see what the best setting is for you but 19 seems to be about the best for most people.

I find it massively increases stability for clocks on the edge of what you can do.

i havent changed anything i though everything was stock >?

Hello all,

got some freebies from AMD for anyone that's contributed to the thread so far, a full copy of the Call of Juarez PC game, couple of years old but a goodie apparently . . . just drop me an email at the address above with the subject AMD Freebie 001 and include a link to one of your posts in this thread that includes a "named" screenshot!

13.5 hour IBT & Prime95 session on my 965 @ 4GHz!

Cheers mate, I've backed the NB & HT off to 2360 MHz in the BIOS as well as the CPU-NB voltage. on my board (unlike some AM3 boards) manually changing the multiplier break C&Q & I won't be able to afford the leccy bill if I let it sit @ 4GHz on 1.536 Vcore whenever my PC's turned on :( I'm currently in the process of backing off all my voltages, I'm wanting 100% stability tho, so if I have to err on the side of caution voltagewise I'll keep a given voltage higher rather than lower. My case has very good airflow (for the MB etc) & my CPU is watercooled so I'm fairly comfortable with the idea of overvolting slightly. In the end Phenoms don't like the heat & loose stability so if I go mad with the voltage I'll get crazy temps & crashing anyway.

Just done a 13.5 hour IBT run with Prime95 running as well  & NO crashes. :D For most of the run my CPU temp was low 50s.

(Ignore the 96'C maximum temp under TMPIN as my board reads a crazy temp for a split second every 30 mins or so when I'm stress testing, I think its a software bug wi CPUID TBH) :(

The kits not even arrived yet, My hope was to just be able to bump it up a little to 965 speeds to get a little extra value from the 955 purchase.

I'll check the temps when I've got it built and come back then :)
