AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

The kits not even arrived yet, My hope was to just be able to bump it up a little to 965 speeds to get a little extra value from the 955 purchase.

I'll check the temps when I've got it built and come back then :)

Hi mate, my C3 stepping 965 in a well ventilated case ran rather warm with the stock cooler & Phenoms lose stability if they get too toasty. By all means give it a go but even @ stock speeds my 965 ran @ 62'C with the stock cooler running full tilt when stress testing with IBT

Good luck

Just bought a 2nd hand MA790XT-UD4P. Stoked to be going back to AMD after almost 3 years.

Will be buying a P2 x2 555 and Zalman CNPS10X cooler a bit later today. I just hope the chip will unlock otherwise this will have been all for nothing!

You should be able to get 965 speeds easily to be honest :)

Thats what I've done for now just upped the multi to x17 in the BIOS nothing else, although there's nothing I can't play on max at 955 speeds (Game @1360x768 24xCSAA 16xAF / All sliders to max in game and CCC), so I'm unsure whether to undervolt to 1.35 volts for 24/7 use and unleash its power when I need it.

Most new motherboards now give the option to save OC profiles in the BIOS or AMD OD so its easy to save profiles and switch over when needed.

Well the general consensus online seems to be that MOST of those chips will unlock just fine, so fingers crossed.

Good luck :D

Yeah just saw this x2 555 unlocked over at XS, very encouraging. On air as well

Also I'm torn between the Thermolab Baram and the CNPS10X. They both seem to perform very well but I prefer the look of the Zalman...but I'm wondering if it will block my RAM slots?

nice one dont discount the fenrir mine dont go above 50c fulll load at 4.0 better temps then most top rated over priced coolers like the corsiar h-50 :D

do you have heatsinks on your mem ? as this is most often the problem

If you can hold on a couple of days I'll tell you! I just ordered an Asus 790X motherboard from OcUK but plumped for the 955 as I don't want to have to fuss about unlocking cores (and take the risk!) but I ordered the Baram with it, so I'll cross fingers and toes and hope that it doesn't block the RAM slots!

I would love to see how the Baram performs. I can wait a couple of days to see though, I'm running 58c at full load on stock fan at the moment.

Might upgrade to Baram when I ramp the voltage up even more.

Yeah the fenrir looks good but I have a spare Noctua NF-P12 fan so am looking at the fanless coolers.

And no I don't have tall heatsinks on my ram. They are OCZ Platinums.

Those chips stay super cool so if you have any half decent case with good airflow you don't need any high end cooling.

My CNP9700 (best 17.99 I've ever spent) keeps my 555BE @ 3.8 with 2.75NB/HT at around 50c so unless you will be aiming for 4ghz+ clocks which are imho not worth it due to the very high voltage bumps needed for very low gain.

Well I am aiming for at least a 4GHz clock with 3 cores...preferably 4 cores. And I need a new cooler anyway :) I will probably get the CNPS10X as the site I'm buying the 555 from doesn't stock the Baram.

If I end up only getting 4GHz with 2 cores I'll be disappointed as it would have been a downgrade lol. But in that case I'll just try another 555 or grab a 955

ive got that cooler with specs below, 235 bus speed 10x nb/ht, 1.45v.
occasionally hit 60 under load, but mostly stayed around 55ish. the noethbridge got pretty toasty though :/. i think its summit to do with using the IGP. i would give you actual temps but i bricked the mobo last week and the RMA process is taking a minor eternity...

Welcome aboard dude, looking forward to your results . . . I expect good things! :D

Welcome also, very nice results and you made "Screen of the Day" . . . couple of pointers, would it be possible for you to include two copies of CPU-z with the second showing the [Memory] tab, also can you try and cut down the image size if possible or fill as much of the space with technical info, and last but not least watch out for excessive quoting (i.e quoting a full post immediately below the original) :)

Welcome also, some nice results there! . . . don't forget to to include two copies of CPU-z with the second showing the [Memory] tab, watch out for excessive quoting and most importantly don't forget to include your name somewhere in your screenies, many thanks! :)

All posted off today first class so hopefully be with you guys soon . . . any AMD® Phenom™ II owners that missed the free game offer more details here

AMD® Phenom™ II X3 705E, that was a new one on me, just had alook here and I'm seeing a 65W TDP chip clocked at 2.5GHz (12.5x200), is that the one? . . . . crikey to get that at 4.0GHz needs a 320Ht Ref? . . that's not easy or is that easy with the right board?

I thought I read you were going for a AMD® Phenom™ II X2 555 BE but I figured that if it didn't unlock beyond a X2 you would be most displeased! :D . . . so in that respect I think you made a good/safe choice!

Yup I wasn't sure if my mobo could do it so I had to give buying the chip some thought....but from what I hear the MA790XT-UD4P should be able to do those kinds of bus speeds. I'll give it a go and if I can't achieve my 4GHz I'll just try a new CPU with a higher multi.

In any case once I sell my 775 mobo and CPU off I should break even or be very close to it...and it's hard to refuse an upgrade priced like that.

Sounds good!

I'm still not sure what restricts HT ref. Clock? . . . like could it be down to the motherboard/chipset or perhaps it is something to do with the chip? . . i remember some LGA775 chips wouldn't work properly with a high FSB?

I've only had one AM3 chip and one AM2+ mobo so not enough hardware to draw any conclusions yet! :)
