AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Suggestions??

My reference 290 has been fine at -100AUX and -31mV in BF3 and BF4, but when it came to Borderlands 2, it totally screwed itself over.

I adjusted the AUX to -90 with maintaining the mV at -31 and it did the same. I set the AUX back to stock with the mV @ -31 and it did it again.

I'm now running at stock which is fine, but what are the recommendations? Run a benchmark while gradually brining the volts down? Which Benchmark?

What does it do, the same screen Thai had? Just run -0.025v and -0.100v AUX for that title. Just setup a different profile in afterburner and switch between the two when you need to. That's what i do.

I use the auto profiles feature of afterburner so my dual 290's switch between two different profiles for 2d/3d.

2D i use -0.050v and -0.100v AUX
3D i use -0.056v and -0.100v AUX

Reason being any lower than -0.050v offset causes 2D flickering when i browse, however that's only at idle. Under 3D load up to -0.056v is stable. Certainly makes a nice difference to the temps and noise of the reference cooler running such low voltages. In game voltages are around 1.1v for both cards.

I found water cooling to be the best option!

Definitely the best option for lowest temps, but if you like fiddling it can be done my way.

Was studying benches for hours on end last night and I really cannot see why anyone would pay extra for the X model of these. I think I'm going to get a 290 to tide me over as I'm not convinced my 280 will keep me happy.
I think LtMatt told me Beyond Earth was using Mantle as well so that will increase performance too but I cannot remember if games like Civ V were more CPU dependent or not.

Yes mate the next Civ game is using Mantle. The lead graphics programmer for the game is always singing its praises on twitter. I think it's possible that it will offer some of the biggest performance uplifts on Mantle we've seen yet because it is a cpu limited game typically.

Firaxis: Why we went with Mantle

Yippee, I'm literally only building this PC because of that game, I'm supposed to be saving for a house but I came into some money so I'm making a 'modest' PC :)
Will be my first AMD card since *looks through OCUK history* Sapphire 7850. I had one AMD card and the fans were always on 100% and I was a noob then so I just sold it and got a different one.

I'd go with a 290 or a 290X. :)

If you can fit them in the Sapphire Tri x or Powercolor are better cards.

I have a slight phobia of MSI cards at the moment :)

43cm available so hopefully fine. I will have a look at some benches for the ones you mentioned, thanks.
I thought it would be Shankly, the 780 was a joy.

Ok guys noted. Would I be right in thinking the OC version isn't worth the extra £30 as if I really needed to I could do a modest OC anyway on the normal one?
