AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

I am impressed with CrossfireX˜ but Thief disapoints me. I run at 1440, with Mantle, and with my original MSI card I got around 46 fps in the benchmark, but with 2 cards it only goes up to the high 50's, but most other benchmarks are towards double.

PEBKAC alert!!

Mantle in Thief is almost flawless for me. Show me the Thief settings you're using. Screenshots plox. 14.6 drivers?

This is me running Thief under Mantle in crossfire mode in a Window, so this is not even full performance.

Also uploaded Thief Mantle single player footage, again flawless running borderless window mode.

Finally my 1440P score from the benchmark thread. Overclocked, full screen mode.

This is an entry.

Cheers Lt, I'll do that when I escape hell for the weekend later today.

If i had to take a guess, id say it could be you're not using exclusive full screen mode, but even if you're not crossfire should still be working. Thief likes a good cpu overclock too, so don't be shy in that regard. Will look again when you have more info.

By the way, has anyone noticed that the vrm temp would be way higher if you were to use supersampling comparing to not?

I mean for most games the highest vrm temp for my card won't exceed 90C, but running Sleeping Dogs' bench with SuperSampling would push it to 110C and beyond.

Was planning on fitting the Corsair H105 and Kraken G10 onto my card, but it was not compatible despite it was listed as compatible. Silly NZXT and their adding support for AMD on the G10 as an afterthought (aka drilling extra holes) and not even bother to test it...luckily already got rma approved by Bailey to send the G10 back for a refund. As for the H105, will hold onto it and wait for Corsair HG10.

Hehe, yep. Sleeping Dogs supersampling uses the compute parts of the AMD gpu so it generates more heat than anything else out there. The vrms get really toasty playing that. Thankfully i finished playing it on my 7990 and 7950 setups. I've yet to play it outside of a few bench runs on my 290's. Great game, completed it three times.

I have the game and all the DLC, but still haven't played it yet.

Last night I actually had time to do some gaming, but opened up the steam library, scrolling up and down looking at the games, and then just closed it and did some web-browsing and then went to bed.

I still have issue bringing myself back to gaming on the PC, don't know why...

Wonder if I have gotten too accustomed to gaming on my phone and PS Vita...

you can run crossfire in windowed mode these days?? is this standard now?

You can only run crossfire in Borderless/Windowed mode under Mantle. Plus it's the only way you can record Mantle gameplay videos as well. In Borderless/Window mode game recording software can record the desktop so you can capture footage. If you use full screen mode then it won't record as the API is still in closed beta so no overlay/capturing software works with it.

Just select borderless/window mode as in my video below at the start and away you go.

Also worth remembering that if you run in Borderless/Window mode you don't get the 'full' performance, but it still scales to 60-90% depending on the resolution and game details used. More gpu bound you are, the better scaling you get.

Well worth playing. The fighting feels ace and you can interact with the surroundings to finish people off.

Daym, i've been waiting for this feature since like forever. I'm gonna sell my 780 just for this feature.

Just remember it's only in Mantle games, so if the game uses DX then it will not work. All Mantle games will work in window mode though. Tried it in Thief and works wonderfully, as you can see in this video.

how about smoothness of play? much stuttering?

also, is there a list of mantle games I can have a browse through?

Smoothness is 95% of what it is in full screen mode, it's very nice. Window Mantle still puts DX to shame.

This is the game engines that Mantle is in so far.

Frostbite 3
Crytek - Cryengine
Oxide Engine Nitrous
Rebellions Asura Engine

So any game released on that engine will have Mantle support ready and available if the game dev and the publisher decide to implement it. The hard work has been done. I would expect Square Enix to become a Mantle partner, but no announcement yet.

There are 20+ titles in development with more coming. Unfortunately most of them are not announced yet. It will be a gradual thing and more and more will be announced over the coming months. Current Mantle games are BF4, BF Hardline and Thief. Two more games are coming near the end of this month. Sniper Elite V3 and Plants Vs Zombies. Dragon Age Inquisition and Civilization®: Beyond Earth were recently announced for Mantle support. There is also some other rumoured Mantle games in this link below. I'd expect most of these to be correct as they indicated that Dragon Age and Hardline (Havana) would have Mantle support and that was just recently announced.

I just did a bit of poking around regarding windowed mode with sli/crossfire. Apparently windowed mode works with sli but there is a lot of contradicting info. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes i think it works for SLI, it's just crossfire that it does not work at all under DX. Not sure how well it works for SLI, will ask Scotty.

Would greatly appreciate it if you can get back to me on that. If AMD did that along with the mix resolution eyefinity I would jump ship without a hearbeat.

Just tried Thief - only 55% card usage :(

Does that mean its working but only 55% on the second card? Still increased frame rates from one card?

Yes 55% performance per card. That's just in Thief though, it may be better in other games. I think he was asking generally Scotty rather than specifically Thief.

I'm uploading a video to youtube that shows Mantle scaling in Windowed mode. I've included the afterburner graphs in the bottom right hand corner so you can see what's going on. (as overlays don't work with Mantle yet) It's about 90% per gpu at 1440P highest settings with my cpu at 5ghz. Will add it to the thread in a few minutes.
