AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Thats really nice, would be awesome if sli could do that too. If WhySotty could confirm other games doesn't work on windowed mode on Nvidia cards then I will most likely jump ship.

Thief - 55% each card
Batman AO - 83% and 98%
Crysis 3 - 58% and 69%
BF4 - 78% and 90%

These games scale in the high 90's in full screen.

Hope this is what you were after :)

anyone with 14.6 installed find core clock all over the place ? on Valley drops anywhere from 1100 (overclock setting) down to 975

roll back to 14.4 and steady on 1100 throughout

If i had to take a guess, id say it could be you're not using exclusive full screen mode, but even if you're not crossfire should still be working. Thief likes a good cpu overclock too, so don't be shy in that regard. Will look again when you have more info.

Ahem. PEBKAC indeed.

Thanks for your time Lt but I forgot I was a 'tard and still had vsync on when I ran the benchmark last night. I got this today when I remembered I was a 'tard. Other than the fact the Tri-X is the OC variety, I haven't manually OC'd my cards.

Everything is so arse about face with my crossfire. Due to the issue with my MSI card I had moved it to the next PCI-E slot along to see if that'd make a difference so when i got my new card I put it in the main PCI-E slot.

Just tried to multi monitor with my TV to watch a program I, obviously legally, downloaded only to find my amp was no longer recognised as in playback devices. I reinstalled 14.6 and now the amp is there.

It games great with better temps than I was expecting, 80 on Heaven being the highest so far and it's not exactly cool where my computer is, and the fan noise is only noticeable as my computer is on my desk to my left and in reality it's not that noisy.

My only real niggle is the fact the purchase of the second card was forced upon me at this time due to the MSI card which I'll RMA next week. The money was earmarked for a new crash helmet but I have 4 of those so a new card to stop me being gaming cardless during the RMA was a no brainer.

I caved in and went for a 290 Pro after being unsure as to whether it was worth it from my 780. Went for a Sapphire 290 Pro Tri-X OC edition for £285 brand new.

Definitely worth it!

Ultra settings with 2xAA at 1440p in BF4/Hardline runs really well. Hardly ever drops below 60-70 with Mantle. I'm really quite impressed and it runs extremely quiet as well.

Ran a quick Heaven bench early using the ocuk bench settings and got 1451 so not too shabby. This is at 1120/1400 on stock volts I believe, but with the power limit at +50%. Voltage maxes out at 1.188v with UPLS disabled + on desktop, but decreases to a max of 1.133ish during a heaven bench...go figure?

Voltage seems pretty low so I'm guessing there's more left in the tank, but haven't tried pushing it at all yet.

Back to the Red side Matt :p

Well that's good to hear, especially after i told you not to switch despite the voices inside me saying brainwash him lol. I never thought it would be noticeable switching from Nvidia DX11 and a 780 to AMD Mantle and a 290 but it just goes to show the difference it can make. Mantle is just so consistent on those frame times.

You've earned this. :p

That's the Tri-X I bought and as much as I like to buy from OcUK, at that price, I couldn't turn it down.

I am impressed with how these higher end cards handle 1440p gaming by themselves let alone in Crossfire.

I ripped my MSI 290 Gaming out this morning and it's now in the safe hands,, of the post office making its way back to OcUK. I had 2 days of Crossfire with no glitching then it decided to go mental during Watch Dogs earlier today.

I've no idea how RMA works but in an ideal world I'd be able to forget the MSI and get another Tri-X OC as the replacement.

Tri-X are such good cards because its AMD's pcb (which is top notch) and a custom cooler which is quiet and performs well (unlike the reference cooler) even with a good overclock. Perfect combo really and most importantly cheap as chips. Hynix memory too. £285 is a cracking price mind.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. What's so 'worth it' that's made you change ?

Well I have gone back to the red team after many years of being in the green team and I have to say it's really rather very good.

I didn't know if I was making the right move or not, as have had nothing but NV cards for quite a while now, but my sli 480 gtx were getting a bit long in the tooth and just couldn't handle 1440p gaming with candy on. So looked at the cheapest option going a second hand R9 290 and slap a water block on it. I have to say I'm really rather impressed with it's performance. Every game I have plays great on it. Happy days:D

Thanks buddy, I feel privileged :D

Mantle was the main pull really as I wanted to see how well it performed and I'd got a bit bored of my 780 and fancied having a mess about with something new.

It didn't disappoint in BF4/Hardline as I say, which are the main games I will be playing. I wanted a single GPU that performed well at 1440p with a bit of AA in these games without needing to go to the expense of having to keep another £200-£300 card for sli/xfire. I've actually slowly downgraded from sli 780s to this card and can't complain. The single 780 was no slouch and it's been a great card - there was just odd moments in BF4 where my fps just used to plummet (although it was good for the most part). This card seems more stable/consistent.

Guess I am now part of this club! :D Got the msi 290 that was on sale two days ago, liking it so far.

Although, I don't think I am getting the FPS that I should be and I'm not sure what the problem is, specs below:

- i5 750 oc to 3.6Hz, goes to 3.8GHz with turbo
- 8GB RAM OC to 1520
- 2560x1080P res.
- evga 750w supernova g2
- games are installed on samsung evo 256GB SSD
- 14.6 beta drivers

Will get more FPS benchies posted a bit later, here is just a quick one of BF hardline and using the following settings:

Now someone that I was playing with last night has a similar setup to me except an AMD FX 8320 CPU oc @ 4.3GHz and a 780 but he was playing with all high @1920x1080 and getting more or less the same FPS as me

I did have a look around to see if the i5 750 is bottlenecking the GPU but most people seem to think it shouldn't be a problem, especially with the older games.

Would like to use mantle in bf games but can't use sweetfx then :(

So any ideas what might be wrong or am I just expecting too much from my rig? :p

edit:

and on w8.1 64 bit

and motherboard is GA-P55-UD3

edit:

temps for gpu are hitting 85 and cpu around 71

Welcome to the club. Here's a little tip, stop using DirectX and use Mantle. Change the preset at the top then restart your game. No need for DX once you have access to Mantle.

Thanks :)

Yeah I am going to use mantle for hardline but not bf 4 as sweetfx won't work then :( Unless there is a fix for this now???

BTW, just having a look at AMD ccc and noticed that AMD overdrive was enabled by default (iirc shouldn't this always be disabled at default??), any recommended settings I should be using for the power limit setting? (with my 7850 and old antec 500w psu, I had to use 20% otherwise I got blue screen in COD black ops 2)
