AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

It is good to see that no one is moaning about the price. I was expecting a torrent of "rip off" and "extortion" but thankfully no one has. :)

it has to be cheaper than the 780 or why even buy it ?

It has to be cheaper just for the fact it's AMD and not Nvidia, Nvidia have the brand power that AMD can only dream of. Witness the embarrassment of the 7990 the fastest card on the planet, one week it is competing with the 690 and titan at the £800 price point, the next it's under £500.

So we're championing Nvidia now because they put out cards that are overpriced, due to their "Brand power"?

people do often see nvidia as the safer option.

regardless of if true ! there years of strong marketing have put them in this position. so yes many people are blinded by marketing and thats the whole point of marketing !

people i know now will still use nvidia first without even considering ati cards from drivers issues from ten years ago :p just how people are.

so yes the amd card needs to be cheaper than a 780 gtx or it will probably struggle unless a lot faster.

This.

Some people blindly add them to the shopping baskets and then ask on General Hardware if the build is alright. I go nvidia because I always have done and hear they are the best!

If I had one of the latest nvidia cards I would not switch. However if you are due an upgrade I would be investing in the AMD offerings for personal preference on value/performance.

Quite possibly but remember what Gibbo said...They can alter prices an hour prior to release, so keep an open mind.

They might try and sell it for much higher to begin with, which will last 2 weeks.

AMD have set the price for the R9 280X, and Gibbo said it will be sub £250, The R9 280X is a reworked 7970 GE.
If the 290X is around a 780 its 20% faster than the 280X, and they have the 290 to squeeze inbetween them.

if it can't match or beat the Titan, its a pointless GPU, whatever the launch price it will end up sub £450, posibly as low as £400 in no time at all, the 290 will end up sub £350.

Clock for clock, the 290X scored about 1000 points more than my Titan. When I put the memory at -500 and left the Core at 1000Mhz, the 290X scored 400 points more than me (this was fire strike). So a good possibility at stock, it has the edge on a Titan.

I am very curious to know how much headroom they have for overclocking. They have 780's that I can't catch in the ocn.net valley thread and I will be watching very closely at how well the 290X operforms and might have to break out some volts again if need be :)

Given the assumed specs, the 290x should be around 40% faster than the 7970.

Also given that the chip is essentially a 7970 with extra ROPs, we can expect the driver support to be pretty good from the get-go.
