AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I prefer to look at it as somebody buying something they want. Nobody forces anybody to buy anything so as much as I agree with the price/performance angle between generations dropping off it doesn't really make a difference while the market is willing to pay price X for GPU Y.

You could use that same argument if Titan and R290X were both released with a retail price of 2K though......so what is the point in even saying that?

Well you couldn't say that because the market wouldn't be willing to pay £2000 for it. At least at the levels needed to make decent levels of profit.

Well, I am part of the market, and I wont be paying £700 or whatever for a 20% performance upgrade on what I already own and on what can be bought for less than £250.

And this is the point, even for someone looking to upgrade from two or three generations ago, or even enter the market as a fresh gaming PC owner, how can you justify:

HD7970 £230 = 100% performance
R9 290X £700 = 125% performance

or for that matter

2 * HD 7970 CF £460 = 170% performance

But yeah, will see how the market reacts, there will still be chumps/people with more money than sense out there willing to buy into it just as there are plenty Titan owners around, but I would have thought these price levels must be touching the point well into the inefficient side of profitability.

The 290X has been spotted in Tokyo Japan. Experts are claiming its much bigger than first anticipated.

I want the R9 290X so badly.
Shame it's probably going to be priced at what I consider too much.

Guess I'm waiting until 20nm to upgrade, and probably going to lose out a lot of money from my 7970.

You don't think there'll be a salvage part (like 7950)? :)

Don't really want to move to "salvage", unless it's nicely priced.
Most I really want to spend on GPU's is 350 each, I broke that rule with the 7950/GTX680 and regretted it.

And last time we stuck on a fab, the 6950 was only really an upgrade over the 5870 if you needed the VRAM, the performance gain wasn't really there, but then again, that wasn't as long a wait as this has been.

What cards do you have now??

I can't imagine you buying this humbug, it goes against everyone you believe in price/performance wise :p

That's not a bash, I feel completely the same way.

Right :), i don't need that kind of grunt and the price you pay for that performance is silly at that end.
