AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

R290X = 649 euros = £550 more like £600
R290 = 519 euros = £440 more like £500

In good old over priced UK

I'm out too if that's the case.

My hope was for a sub £500 290X and sub £400 290.

I think I'd rather go with a 780 at these prices.

Looks like you'll even get more free games with the 780. Unless these new card turn out to be spectacular performers, AMD would appear to have gone full retard.

The Titan is ~£800 and the 290X is (apparently) £550. Why are you guys balking at the price if the performance is supposed to be slightly better?
Because most people are still living in (La la land) the year 2003, and expect top end cards to cost around £300 to £350 10 years later...

Wake up and smell the coffee, and get your wallets out... :eek:

My wallet is still cowering from my Haswell upgrade. :D

Back in 1992 a 486 SX PC cost £1000.

By your logic, we should just adjust for inflation. So a Celeron PC today should cost... £1800 :p

It gets worse every year, I think Haswell is a waste of money, yet I've gone and done it, the urge for the strong smell of new hardware emanating from my yearly new case is too much! :(

Seriously though you can understand why people miss one or two generations of chipsets/cpu's, put more money towards the graphics, at the end of the day that is where you will get your grunt.

Anyone looking to upgrade, those HIS HD 7950 IceQ in crossfire are looking more and more desirable, before they go up in price again tomorrow. Two of them should still cream a R 290X for £370 2 x 5 free games.

I bought a 486 SX 25mhz Packard Bell for £999 from Dixons years, and years ago... No soundcard or ethernet built in, I feel the pain. :(

I was on £4,800 a year back then... lol :(

Snap. Only mine was an Ambra Sprinta (the company went out of business soon after :p)

And it had no sound (we didn't know this at the time), leading to an additional £200 spent on a Sound Blaster 2. Ouch indeed!

Totally going off topic, but I remember buying this soundcard, it was British made! and had a Roland MT-32 chip? Classic soundcard? was totally amazing sound for the time, had Soundblaster 2 emulation. Cost me about £150 :(

I know what you mean. I can't think of a year gone by of late where I haven't put something new in my case. As far as the Haswell upgrade goes, is there anything better than the smell of a new motherboard? Mmmm. :D

I paid £400 for a top of the range card in 2003, that's something like £600 in today's money!

And even then, how many newly released games did it run at high resolution, max details?

I remember spending far too many hours playing doom on a 486 and it couldn't even fill the full screen. That and £250 for a dual speed CD-Rom and a soundcard.

You can have a great gaming experience with a £200 - £250 card at 1080p.... anything else is for multi screen, 3D or 1440p with very high to max details.

On 28nm Hawaii can't be a huge step forward, sure it will have 35% more shaders but will be heat limited compared to the OC capability of 7970. 20nm will present technical challenges.

We'll have to see what Maxwell brings but unless I accidentally buy a 1440p monitor I can't see a reason to go for the £500+ cards. Hell, I can live with a little less AA

The release prices are a bit of a disappointment but I'm hoping the novelty will wear off and the price war brings them down to a sensible level sometime soon and will be thoroughly welcome!

I am bricking it, I won't be able to restrain myself on launch day and I know I'm gonna get gouged for like £80 easily.

That's the cost of a block, if only I could wait a couple of weeks...
