AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

The Titan is ~£800 and the 290X is (apparently) £550. Why are you guys balking at the price if the performance is supposed to be slightly better?

We haven't seen enough in the way of benchmarks to say it's a Titan killer. Meanwhile, a 780 will also get pretty close to the Titan, and reference 780s are going for £50-75 less than that 290X price.

Both cards are a good £50 dearer than I was hoping for.

If it just matches Titan at a lower but still equally stupid price point it is a big fat "meh" if you ask me. If it only just beats a 780 and releases at a higher price point it is pointless.

But if it beats a 780 for the same price as one, and doesn't cost £800 like the Titan, then surely that's not all bad?

EDIT: I didn't realise some of the 780s were £480 on OCUK. That changes things a bit.

VideoCardz reporting the following pricing info for MSI's R9290 and 290X has been sent to retailers:

R290X = 649 euros = £550
R290 = 519 euros = £440

Hilarious :D

Do any of the other old gits on this forum remember when the absolute top-of-the-range card was £300 ish? Wasn't too long ago.

AMD and nV can both go **** themselves. I'm sure they've colluded to keep prices rising. And these re-brands are tiresome.

We desperately need another player in the market, like PowerVR could have been.

If the 290x was near £400 and beat a 780 it would be very interesting and I would have gone through with my pre-order. If it is £550 it is a very uninteresting release...unless you absolutely must have AMD.

I paid £400 for a top of the range card in 2003, that's something like £600 in today's money!

Anyone remember when IBM was the dominant player in the PC market. With the prices they charged for a top of the range PC it makes the Titan look like an absolute give away.

I don't agree with the Titans price either.
But also, don't forget, the 79XX is 22 months old.

Market sets the price.
But I just won't be buying.

Hmm, 10 years of inflation at 3% would make a £400 card in 2003 money approx £533 today.

Just a shame that wages for a lot of us haven't kept up with inflation, I guess.

I still think it's obscene money, and that nV and AMD have both decided to keep prices high. Knowing that neither really wants a price war. Those days are over.

I'm looking forward to your water cooling results with great interest Kaap. I hope to see your 290X's at the top of the charts. :)

I think Commander Scotty may have something to say about that.:D
