AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Clock for clock (I assume). I ran the test at 1050Mhz and this I believe is what the 290X will be running at 'out of the box'. Don't shoot me if I am wrong but if this is the case, we have a tie (more or less) :D

How much OC room is available on the 290X remains to be seen and if they are the actual clocks I am assuming. Titan performance for the price of a 780 anyone?

Cheers Greg, definitely food for thought.

Do I see a 5Ghz clock speed there at 1.376V? I hate you.

Nah bud. I am on 4.625Ghz. My 5Ghz is 1.495V :(

I'm thinking 1150Mhz for 24/7 on the stock cooler, maybe 1250 on water for benching, unless someone like 8 Pack gets a hold of one.

Ah fair play.

I'm assuming the 290 will clock well and that the GPU-Z read out from Uncle Tom in China is way off the mark. But I guess we'll see.

Next month needs to hurry up so I can cancel my pre-orders :D.

In the scenario that it is pretty much neck and neck with the Titan, and the Titan price comes down...I'm still a bit weiry (not to dig up old wounds) about the VRAM situation. Obviously this isn't a massive issue just yet but I still think it's worth noting (considering they're still going to be a 500+ card).

The 4K conundrum. Mentioning this now as I've only just read this on Hexus, but it rings true.

The memory requirements of Total War: Rome II are enough to require the GTX 770's settings to be automatically downgraded a touch at the 4K settings; this does not happen for the AMD card. This means that the result cannot be directly compared against the Radeon R9 280X.

Even so, AMD still has the upper hand in this title. 4K is, well, a few steps too far for high-quality settings. Both cards' framebuffers are completely filled by the needs of the game engine, too.

Is the 1GB extra enough, and even if it is, is it going to ring true in a few months? You've got a card that's not even hit the market yet, and there is potentially an Nvidia counterpart based on the already ageing GK110 possibly right around the corner. Not to mention the prices crashing on the Titan. Which this in itself opens up new potential sales for people looking for 4K on a less than 'pioneer baller' budget.

Tell me I'm wrong - but are AMD completely barking up the wrong tree trying to market the 290X at 4K?

If I flog my lappy (which I will), I am tempted to get one or a 1440P screen. Not decided yet but I wouldn't mind a new toy to play with.

Those temps on the R9 290X are definitely Titan beating and I also don't think the 290X is going to scare the GTX 780 in the overclocking stakes either.

The other thing to remember for benching a single card is the 4770k will give a nice efficiency bonus over a 3930k.

After playing Crysis 3 at 5760x1080 and seeing over 4.6GB of VRAM used, this doesn't strike me as the card to get for 4K. It is fairly mute though because 4K isn't a viable option for the 99% of gamers but when the prices come down to an acceptable level, then we will be seeing GPU's that not only require 3 times as much grunt as the current cards but 3 times the VRAM.

We need someone with a 4770K for a clock to clock comparison on a 780. Probably some kicking about already. Although maybe not stock - Uncle Tom from China is a bit of a numpty for that.

Yeah agree that there won't be any real reason to buy into it for awhile. But AMD have been making a big deal about it recently.

Daft really. IMO anyway.

I just want a card that plays the most demanding games at 1440p >60fps. The GTX 780 nearly managed this but drops on a few games. I do not know if SLI is efficient for a single monitor.
