AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Really? That thread seems to point to the opposite, although I haven't finished reading it. Also "The nickel plating is for corrosion protection. Copper corrodes fairly easily", so I guess that explains that.

edit: checked a few other sites and they all say copper is better than nickel but nickel is used to prevent oxidization.

Any news on just the 290 yet (not the 290X)? Benchies? Price? I've tried looking but it seems there's some international law that only states any text with 290 must have an X after it.

Yet again? I've never even posted on the subject before LOL.

It doesn't render my point moot at all as it wasn't even necessarily aimed at AMD saying it was a Titan killer. You've assumed it is and that is your fault. It was about anyone saying it was a titan killer. To be a "killer" it has to be faster by a margin. 5-10% is fag paper territory.

Killer is all about performance. Or it should be. If you factor in price it becomes convoluted.

I think you're confused.

"Yet again" was referring to the fact that another person was commenting on what performance R9 290X needs to achieve to be deemed a "killer", while convincing themselves price doesn't matter. Your opinion on what is killer is not necessarily the same as mine or any other persons. Simply stating performance is the only metric that should be considred while ignoring price is disingenuous and frankly BS.

If you believe R9 290X is not a Titan Killer based only on performance go right ahead. I and many others will also factor in price as a valid metric and judge R9 290X by our standards.

What block is that a picture of?
I was under the impression that 290X didn't have Crossfire fingers, which that card clearly has.

Have a search on google, there are 2 versions of the 290x PCB, one with the crossfire fingers, one without. I'm guessing EK were given an early/prototype PCB (with fingers) in order to make the blocks in time for launch.

Early PCB with fingers http://wccftech.com/rumor-amd-hawaii-gpu-r9-290x-volcanic-islands-pcb-leaked-512bit-interface-massive-die-size/

Later PCB without fingers http://wccftech.com/retail-amd-radeon-r9-290x-pictured-detail-pcb-shot-close/

Both are identical other than the crossfire fingers.

For back compatability perhaps?

Maybe a x4x4 system would swamp the pcie bus if crossfired so can use the "fingers" - but with more modern mobo's the pcie bus is available to use?

It's not the only metric when judging the card as a whole. Of course not. But what really matters in this argument is performance. If you're factoring in price then there's already a load of cards out and combinations of cards which are Titan "killers" and then it just doesn't mean a lot. As you put: it's disingenuous and frankly BS.

You have your opinion, I disagree and I am therefore ignoring it. By trying to be brash with angry terms all over the place is not really helping your point though. You view things differently. I am looking purely at performance.

I think that the 290x should be compared to the 7970 as it was the flagship single gpu card for amd last gen and whatever nv have at the price point when the 290x is released.

Agreed, when comparing GPUs from competing vendors, where possible the same price point should be compared. In this case the R9 290X should be compared to the nearest priced Nvidia alternative. It was never meant as an alternative to Titan, it was always a GTX780 competitor. let's see where AMD price it and decide if it is a success of failure, not against some made up "Titan Killer" BS.

How would the 290X stack up against the best 7990?
Im just wondering if that is a good choice? I dont care about heat/noise or leccy bills
