AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Um, no you're just justifying it. Had Nvidia released a 95C GPU, the flaming would have been immense. It's AMD though so 95c is fine, Wonderful in fact.

I feel like I've entered the twilight zone where a new GPU that performs worse than ones that have been out for months, whilst consuming more power and operating at near boiling water temp is ok..

No more posts from me today lol, I'll come back later and hopefully sanity will be restored...

To call everybody (including the majority of reviewers) insane because they disagree with you isn't really helping you make a point...

You're reviewing the card based on its reference cooler. Replace it with a decent cooler and the core temp would be much lower at the same speed, that wouldn't make it suddenly a better GPU.

My CPU by your logic would be fairly awful, as it hits 100C instantly on the stock cooler above 1.25v, while it runs about 60C with a decent one at the exact same voltage/speed.

After discussing with a friend i have to ask, were the people getting 290X cards ever really considering Titans?

Yes it's good it's beaten them, but was the performance really the thing that swayed the decision?

This was always about the 780, not the Titan - nobody takes the titan comparisons seriously, it's just not the same market (irrespective of how close the end performance is).

They've undercut the 780 by a decent margin with something quite similar, with a few more bells and whistles perhaps making the difference in the next couple of months (if mantle actually performs). But an overclocked 780 at a similar price would still get my money AT THE MOMENT.. I'll problly change my mind as soon as non-ref designs or overclockable 290 nonx hit the shelves though :D

As always, wait one month and something better comes along - at least it will now AMD have finally entered the competition once more!

95C is definitely too hot. If it can run at that that's fine, but I wouldn't want it like that all the time.

I've been reading through the thread and it has become clear to me that some people don't understand "heat". Temperature is only part of the equation. Having something at 200degrees does not automatically heat up your room faster/more then something at 50degrees. You have to look at power usage (watts) in order to be able to tell which one will dump more heat in the room.

Yes in this case, if you look at max draw in [H]'s review, the 290x has the potential to dump more heat in the room. But that has absolutely nothing to do with running at 95c vs. other cards at lower temperatures.

You could have something which draws 100watt at the wall, running at 300c, and something else sucking up 200w at the wall and measuring in at 30c. The 200w object will heat up your room twice as fast.

There's no hoping needed, the 780 will get a price drop when the TI lands, how big that price drop is can be anyone's guess, they'll monitor sales over the next few weeks and make a decision based on that.

its obvious nvidia will just match the 290 or drop slightly below then it sells more .

me going green i go whatever i think is best i dont care if its red green or blue magic :D

Honestly the heat isn't a big deal as some people seem to be making out. Very few people buy top of the range enthusiast cards then leave them on stock cooling. Reference boards in particular.

More wattage required isn't ideal, but price : performance is spectacular in all honesty.

Not to burst peoples bubbles but is it just me or is anyone else thinking that water cooling is a must for these reference 290X's? Those temps alone do put me off (and I know AMD have stated this is within the cards working parameters) but the noise is a no no.

Custom cooled cards for the noise and heat conscious among us and reference for those who don't care about heat and noise because they are water cooling.

was about to watercool my current card but I waited for new tech
so either way it was gonna go cold fusion.
