AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Could 79x0 (and 7870 Tahili based cards) possibly be crossfired with these new cards, or maybe the 280X ?

cj

hard to say, if they redesign the card a bit to much then no normally a yes.

its a smart plan, keep the 7970 that beats the 770 and beef it up a bit more, then add 2 new cards and have a good ball until 20nm.

Hot off the press folks.

Radeon R9 280X is Rebranded HD 7970 GHz Edition

I don't have any "inside" information but best sources I have still claim R9 290 is a dual GPU card, 290X is the big ultra and either 280 or 280X is a rebranded 7970 and whichever one isn't is the one step down card from the ultra card rather than the 290. (none of these are definitive sources but I trust them over random "leaks" on the internet).

I think in terms of performance, we would already have a "rough idea" in what kind of performance range these new cards are gonna be. The most important question remains- the prices.

Apart from lowering prices how will NV respond to this in the short term?

I am planning on buying a 770 and there is already a competing ATI product so even if just a slight rebrand the new ATI card will outpace a 770.

Will NV release new non-Maxwell cards this year then?

The interesting thing is, according to that article there will be a chip to compete with Titan and a different chip to compete with the 780. Now that's thrown a spanner in the works.

Its nothing unusual, there will be two Hawaii GPU's, one full fat and another a salvage GPU.

Just like with Tahiti.

Tahiti XT
Tahiti Pro
Tahiti LE

So it could be:

Hawaii XT 2880 SP's / 2560 SP's
Hawaii Pro 2560 SP's / 2304 SP's

Noticed some of the chat on that webcast thing, people are saying that Nvidia will still be better because of 'Titan' and 'Titan Ultra', don't they realize that cost is also a factor? When priced twice the cost of a normal GPU it becomes irrelevant?

Jeezus I do worry about people's thinking capacity sometimes :p.

If 290X can come close to Titan but costs half the money than AMD did alright, if it beats the Titan and costs less or similar to GTX 780 than what more can we ask of AMD?

I think people expect to much at launch lol.

You called it right.

Thing is you will never please some people. People will defend their gpu/purchase decision regardless.

Well it's partly right if you just look at it from a performance angle, better is better, price doesn't change that. Price/Performance angle then yes nvidia don't stand a chance.

I think some people are just a little upset that they spent $1000 on a GPU only to find that they may have been a little silly.
