AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

6gb 290x is coming wouldnt suprise me if a 8gb version are produced if the bus allows it technically..
one OC card dont make a serie. many try to OC haswell and not that many if any does 5ghz or close to and many consider Haswell OC ability as meh at best.

I'd expect an 8gb version as well. If fact i read that's already being lined up.
 
Anybody with the money to run a 4K screen won't expect a single GPU to handle it. That type of gamer will likely run 2 or 3 GPU's. These new Hawaii GPU's will obviously be more capable at 4K than the cards that came before them.



Yeah looking forward to seeing how they all do when overclocked.

4k gaming resonably are years away the industry and media tends to write about new things even if they havent been coming out in a fashion.
and yea seems 4k is adressed with the new line of cards.
 
Someone has to push the standards and make sure they are available. Why would any monitor manufacture worry about creating gaming 4k screens if there is no proper support for them? So it would start by AMD and nVidia offering full functional support for 4K and then after a few years the screens will start to appear "for realz" and hopefully get cheap enough for people to actually buy.

Exactly, we're at a point when pretty much any single GPU can handle 1080P well, if AMD / Nvidia don't push for a new standard, there sales would decline. With 4K they can keep selling more and more high end GPU's to handle it properly.

I don't know if you guys remember CRT monitors and 640 x 480 resolution, but when things moved to LCD and 720P / 1080P that was a whole new level, now that GPU's have fully caught up with 1080P gaming. I imagine that AMD's new cards will even handle 1440P very well. Thus now the push towards 4K, drive more sales..

4K monitors are still too expensive for most people at $3,500 and you would most likely require 3 graphics cards @ $650 so $1950. Don't see many people going 4K too soon...
 
As long as it beats the titan at a much smaller die size its a victory for amd.

Shows that they know how to design a more efficient GPU core ;)

Role on 20nm can't wait too see what that brings, may not be for over a year though, anyone thinking it will be q1 or q2 is kidding themselves

Look at the benchmarks posted. One of these new AMD GPU's cant even muster an average of 30fps at 2560x1600 and 4xAA in Tomb Raider, Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light.

Those are CURRENT gen console games. Do you all seriously think even 3 of these in crossfire are going to get decent framerates at 4k res with some Anti alisasing on the next gen games that we will be seeing next year and beyond?

I admire your optimisim if nothing else!

4k gaming will be a reality in the next few years but these current crop of cards will be woefully underpowered to cope. They may have the vram, but big woop, you will be getting sub 30fps before they hit any kind of vram wall.

I spent north of £500 on my Dell 2407 - and have had around 5 years of use out of it

I'd be quite happy paying a lot more than that for one now

but not for a graphics card which is effectively out of date in 12-18 months

Agreed, very happy with my 1440P Shimian.

A decent monitor makes all the difference as well. Always think it's odd when people pair 780's or 7970's on tiny 1080P screens with crappy viewing angles etc. I would rather have a lesser card and put that money towards a decent IPS screen..

Hoping I can get a few more years out of my shimmy, by then the Korean's will be putting out decent 4K screens :p.
 
The connection is twice as wide, so it doesn't need to be high clocked. Hopefully it'll overclock pretty decent though.

Edit: Brain fart, it's only 33% wider, was thinking the 7970 was 256bit, not 384bit.

So it looks like those benchmarks we have seen might have been with the card running at its maximum overclock.Obviously don't know whether that was with any voltage increases.
