AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Ragnahex sadly it will be going on for at least 1.5 month.
290x comes out and lets say its same speed as 780 or bit faster.
Then all AMD fanboys will start to go---> Maybe its not faster than Titan but its got Mantle!!!
And NV fanboys will say that there is no games using it
And then AMD chaps will say that there is not many games using NVs physx

And it will continue forever :D
Thats how i see it :P

nicnik ye that one is:
I can hear you coming VS I can see you coming

hahahaa. True audio in my opinion is something i wont notice at all....

Gsync hmmm extra 100 pounds for monitor. Thats one of things you need to see before you buy in my case.

I can't wait to see what it's capable of and hope it's not just another hype failure. Pretty confident it won't be as dice are hyping it just as much as amd are. It's been said for ages now that dx is the main thing holding back the pc where as most think it's consoles. Consoles have been around just as long as gaming computers and i believe but could be wrong that when dx came around to being the main api things started to slow down. I know ports are part of the problem but it's mainly coding that's holding back the pc. I read an article with a top amd guy years back where they were saying consoles were not the problem and he went into length why it was dx. Maybe mantle was in there plans back then.

People seem to talk like Mantle will replace DirectX. I'm sure AMD would love it to as well.
But, for the time being I don't see Mantle being anything more than an alternative API that a small number of people (overall) will be able to take advantage of.
If DirectX was really such a big hinderence, surely more would have moved to OpenGL and tried to get that developed more. OpenGL after all has the advantage that it would widen the target audience by making Linux and OSX versions of games easier to do. Mantle does also make Linux and OSX ports easier (at least in theory), but has the downside of excluding all Nvidia owners, all Intel owners, all 6000 series (and below) AMD owners and the lower 7000 series owners (7600 and below I believe).
For this reason I can't see games being designed for Mantle and making use of everything Mantle offers. I expect it to be much more like BF4 where Mantle is added and perhaps makes things a little more efficient and allows a few extra effects.
So I don't really see Mantle moving PC gaming on as it'll still be limited by DirectX (or OpenGL) assuming the developers don't want to exclude the mojority of their potential customers.

I will say I'm probably more tempted by a 290X than a 780Ti (just). But I'm hoping I can avoid upgraditis until the next gen of cards.

It will never replace it. The 3 devs at the nvidia event the other day said it was never meant as a replacement and one of them was the guy working on BF4 with Mantle so I'm sure he's very clued up on it all.

However if it does offer noticeable benefits over DirectX it might show the industry that a change from DirectX is needed, which is good for us all.

Round and round we go.

If mantle is being used for bf4 will that mean the engine is basicallly mantle ready, It would only take a bit of effort to get into the top engines and ATI users could see big benefits ?

Some people are saying the 25th but it's definitely this month. It seems there's an nda on the release date which is pretty unusual. i think amd are holding back as much as they can because nvidia plan to counter straight away. It's a little like a game of poker.

Hope it's not a massive fail or let down. All this hype.

I'm excited about Mantle but anyone who's optimistic that it will replace DirectX is on a one way trip to wrongsville.

You never know. if it's as good as AMD are making it out to be then it could eventually phase out DirectX.

Whilst a nice thought, it takes more than a bit effort to convince all the top devs to use a proprietary API. Why do you think PhysX isn't in a great deal of titles? Devs don't like having to code in another API to their games, it adds to development time, creates further problems and usually requires further optimization so it runs well enough.

Got a sneaky look at a more legitimate review. It's since vanished. Seems to be good news for gamers, 290X seems to be generally around 10% faster than Titan but trading blows on some things. With power consumption only a bit more than Titan. Competition is good, now bring on the 780ti !

If you find it, trust me it and don't post it here. Keep Matt in suspense :p
