AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

are you sure about that, my 7990 is undervolted and seems to be performing the same as the 295X2..... and that includes with the core/memory backed off as well.....

with your card the 120 mm rad is way too small, i would swap it out for a 240mm and then send the receipt to AMD for them to pay for it ;)

Very sure, from looking around the net when my card was having issues having to mess with voltages and put up with a hot and loud card was the rule rather than the exception with the 7990. It seems that getting one that worked out of the box like the reviews said was a rarity at best. I've not got a 295x2, a pair of 290's.

 Asbolutely beautiful Loxa! Makes me feel embarrassed about the inside of my case :(

The card runs fine out of the box, and is very quiet (40db), even after 2 hours playing Tomb Raider at 100% core load with no throttling.
But the radiator has to be positioned as per instructions

a) Needs cold air
b) Has to be higher than the card
c) The pipes have to be at the bottom.

So some of us, are lowering the voltage to lower the unneeded heat, without affecting the card performance (hell even takes a huge overclock with less power), replacing the fans to mitigate the cold air that we cannot get inside the case etc.

And a final thought. This is "Overclockers". Anyone around here complaining about fiddling with the card, is on the wrong forum :D

Ok, is it better to have Tessellation & Maximum Tessellation Level on use application settings instead of AMD Optimized?

I'd recommend using the default settings typically. You can experiment by altering things though, which can drastically improve image quality settings. Usually with DX11 games you need to use the 'enhance' option to get things like supersampling AA to apply correctly. Take a look at this thread, it will explain things a lot better and help you learn how to set this up for games.

I have raised an RMA request for my 295x2, GPU2 is still hitting 75C (and throttling) within 3 minutes of playing a game despite upgrading the case fans and fiddling with the rad position.

I was playing Crysis 2 at 1440p yesterday (Ultra/DX11). With the Rivatuna OSD I could see GPU2 throttling down to 750Mhz at times!

They said they need to test it before they can replace it, which I understand.

I'm concerned they test faulty components in open systems though (to make swapping things in and out quickly, whilst testing) and it GPU2 might not overheat in that sort of environment so I made the point that I already beefed up my case fans to eliminate airflow/environment issues.

I believe your cooling has genuine issues. My GPU2 is running cooler than the GPU1 by 6C constantly. So something else might be the case with yours if they have the same plumbing.

However, have you tried to put the rad on outside the case and see if it continues to behave like that?

Even if he placed it out of the case and it solved the cooling problem i would still suggest RMA.

I've already called Overclockers, DPD will collect it tomorrow and the guy on the phone assured me it's tested in a closed case environment.

They have replacements in stock as well (phew!)

Yeah OCUK are pretty good on those things.

However stock availability is something that scares me off, and I would live with the rad scratching few seconds, every few hours. The card goes for waterblock either way some time, and is a good card.

your deffo right that the 7990 runs way too hot (poor cooler design), it is impossible to cool the card without reducing the core/ mem.....because reducing the voltage on its own doesn't work, i found this out on a ``mining website``

i was close to getting rid of the card but it's fine now...... a reduction in FPS?.....yes but not by much, plus on 1080p you dont notice it

Well the idea was that the watercooling should stop issues that plagued the 7990. Not too fused about a reduction in fps if it's above 60. But I played Crysis 3 last night.

1440p, Very High graphics (max) and FSAA.

Couldn't maintain 60fps due to the throttling of GPU2. Reviews indicate it should do.

What hertz do you play at 144hz?
