AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

your deffo right that the 7990 runs way too hot (poor cooler design), it is impossible to cool the card without reducing the core/ mem.....because reducing the voltage on its own doesn't work, i found this out on a ``mining website``

i was close to getting rid of the card but it's fine now...... a reduction in FPS?.....yes but not by much, plus on 1080p you dont notice it
Mine ran fine at stock clocks.

I've decided to add another fan, think a push pull configuration would help a lot. I've got a few fans lying around that fit but no screws. What's the best to get? Or is it just better to get another fan.

Does push/pull make any real difference on a rad this size?
Also, is the 295x2 fan connector PWM?
Is there any way of controlling the speed via software? Does AB work or does that control the fan on the card? (or neither?)

No, the fan is actually only 2 pin (3 pin sized) and draws power from the graphics card.

I bought a Akasa ripper 120mm to replace the stock fan (to see if I could solve my heat issue) and because that is 4 pin I had to plug it in to my motherboard and whack the RPM up to full (1950rpm) which was pretty loud.

It didn't do anything, so I put the old fan back on and plugged it back in via the card.

The fan you plug on the motherboard can be controlled by BIOS, controller (additional device) and if your motherboard allows it an application.

My motherboard allows to change the fan speed using the SpeedFan application.

So try to set the Piranha @60-70% fan speed and see the results. Unfortunately I have to wait for the cable extensions to try mine again :(

One thing that might be helpful to others is that with ULPS Disabled/144hz refresh rate I have a 15c increase

35c - idle
50c - idle with ULPS Disabled & 144hz (instead of 60/120)

I do not even have my second monitor plugged in yet as I am waiting for a mini display port adapter.

Yes, I know/understand that.

Because I had the heat issue with mine, I put it up to 100% to see if it helped, and it didn't really.

Unfortunately SpeedFan doesn't work with my motherboard (Asus Z87 Maximus VI Impact), but Asus have a program called FanXpert II which allows you to set the RPM's manually or use smart mode.

Unfortunately Smart mode can only be tie the fan speed to the CPU or Mainboard temperature, unlike SpeedFan which lets you change the speed based on the the GPU temperature. Hence I put the speed up to 100%

In the end I mounted the Ripper in the front of the case so it didn't go to waste.

The card runs fine out of the box, and is very quiet (40db), even after 2 hours playing Tomb Raider at 100% core load with no throttling.
But the radiator has to be positioned as per instructions

a) Needs cold air
b) Has to be higher than the card
c) The pipes have to be at the bottom.

So some of us, are lowering the voltage to lower the unneeded heat, without affecting the card performance (hell even takes a huge overclock with less power), replacing the fans to mitigate the cold air that we cannot get inside the case etc.

And a final thought. This is "Overclockers". Anyone around here complaining about fiddling with the card, is on the wrong forum :D

Not if it requires fiddling to work as advertised in the first place. Was actually referring to the 7990 and the multitude of headaches people had with that card.
:)

My temp issues are definitely down to airflow...took the sides off at temps only hit 63 degrees. Case is a NZXT H440. Any ideas?

that case has problems anyway, it's mentioned here on ``Case Central`` , you need to modify its roof fans.

my case needs modifying too, it cant handle a 7990, no way man !

New owner of a 295X2 (well, since last week) chiming in.

My box was empty except for the card and cooler in their foil bags, and a single leaflet about it being heavy and thus taking care when taking it out. (I guess I should contact OC about that, though there's nothing in there I really need ... and yes, the box was sealed).

So there was no warning about how to mount it. I checked the manual online to be sure, all it was specific on was to mount the cooler above the card. And that's what I did, it's up top blowing the air up, with a 200mm fan on the other side of the grill (also an exhaust). Technically the pipes on the radiator are still on the bottom, and no air should get into the system. Will that be okay, or should I really move it to the back and mount it vertically behind my CPU cooler?

Googled the case, seems to support 3x 140mm front fans.

That's a good place to start.

I think I can only fit 2 140mms.

I actually have two lying about, they're from my Phankteks TC14PE that I ended up replacing with a watercooler. Worth swapping them in?

As for roof fans, that's where my H100i is mounted, so I can't really fit anything else there.

Check the box again. There is a cleverly concealed box below all the other stuff.

I also missed this at first...

Mounting two 140mm fans made quite a difference. Usually 2 thirds of a run of Heaven would cause throttling, whereas now I got through a complete one and then half again before the card got too hot. I still have one 140mm fan left, but I'm pretty clueless where I might put it now.
