AMD RADEON RX 470 SERIES NOW AVAILABLE FROM £164.99 DELIVERED!!

It could be AMD is trying to upsell the RX480 or have lots of R9 380 and R9 380X cards to sell but even then,it makes me wonder what card is going to bridge the performance gap between the RX460 and the RX470.

The RX460 is not a fully enabled Polaris 11 chip,as it has 896 shaders instead of 1024 shaders and I expect it will be around R7 370 level.

And R7 370 level is... wait for it... 7850 perf.

A 7850 has been something like £25 on the 2nd hand market for ages (12+ months), and obviously you can't buy new anymore.

The 370 itself is like £100 new. The 460 will be £100.

So... welcome to 2012 mid-range perf at 2014 prices ;) The future's bright...

Sadly the gtx750ti is close to the same price and the GTX950 which is around the same performance as a r9 270 is £120ish and above.

There has been close to no movement at that level for 4 years now.

It's a shame the RX460 does not use a full Polaris 11 GPU.

It still is a big performance gap between £100 and £165 though.

I have a 270 iv been playing about with and its more like a 7870. Surely a 370 is better than that.

7850 performance isn't bad for the low end anyway. I'm upgrading from one now and there really aren't that many games that it struggles with at 1080p. If they increased performance at that end too much no one would bother buying the mid range cards.

Posts like this really don't help.

The 480 just about manages 60 FPS in games at high/ultra. A 7850 does about 20 FPS at those settings.

To get a 7850 to 40 FPS you need to drop to medium settings, and getting 50+ FPS means low settings.

Seriously, when I sold my 7850 a year or so ago, it couldn't play game modern games at decent settings above 40 FPS. It is not "fine" for 1080p.

I would have to agree, at 1200p my 290 just about maxes games out while keeping close to 60fps average. Game dependent i have to drop the odd setting.

The Powercolore AIB one was apparently available for $180(!),but even now it is $200 and that includes the Gigabyte ones.

So,we are paying nearly £20 more for some of these AIB RX470 cards for some reason.

Even at $200 they're still getting it for a lot less than we do, that should work out to £183 when adding on VAT.

I don't understand why most of the manufacturers are price gouging. It's a strange day when an Asus card looks more fairly priced than a Powercolor one.

That feel when I have a 1gb 7750 and everybody is ragging on the better card. I clocked Fallout 4 on that card. Playable 1080p in most games even up to today. Playable but not pleasant. Got half way through The Witcher 3 in 720p low-medium, but after a few crashes I got sick of that and put it down feelsbadman. Can not wait for my upgrade.

It's quite intriguing how people will kid themselves into believing that old hardware is still relevant. I was guilty of this too, as I made posts on this forum in the last year saying my i7 860 was still perfectly fine for games, when really it was lagging behind hugely.

You are probably right considering i now find 30 fps fine, probably just the gradual getting used to it getting lower and lower on the card each year. Those days will be gone when the shiny new card arrives by Monday though :)

Which is why I can't understand the new 460 card.

It might be low power, and that's all well and good, but it's basically only going to be any good for CS:GO, TF2, etc.

I guess it's fine for a mobile GPU, but why anyone would buy a desktop 460 for £100 - I honestly don't see any reason to. At that spending level you'd be mad not to go for something 2nd hand.

All the arguments about not wanting to buy 2nd hand are valid if you're shelling out £200 or so... but if you have £100 you really don't want to be getting a new card which is soooooooooo under-powered.

A 7850 used is about £25. Why would you buy a new card at £100 with the same perf? Either buy a £25 card with absolutely no risk and get the same perf... or spend £100 and get a 2nd hand card with 2.5x the perf.

The desktop RX 460 just doesn't make sense.

Because not everyone is going to be using that card for gaming. I myself would think about buying it for Video Editing.

Exactly this, Amd have failed to address the itx market. i bought an msi R7 360 very early this year to stick in the htpc for some casual steam gaming (f1, lego, sonic racer, assasin creed etc). It also decodes videos and high bit rate hd master sound to my av amp. I also use the gpu to speed up encoding in powerdirector 14 and handbrake.
The card cost me 90, but it was a temporary stop gap as i knew rx460/470 was coming.
Eventually i'll be getting a new 4k screen and the improved uvd and vce on polaris 11 will make the rx460 a great htpc card. It seems to provide 20-30% gains in fps over a 360 so it might just about provide 7850 performance from 896 shaders. If priced right it could be a great card for entry level gaming and editing.

The reference 470 is a great price and i might buy that and rip the cooler off,or mod it to the length of the pcb.

Odd I have the best itx based GPU in my build (IMO). And it's an AMD card...
