Cheers, have you done any testing on the TR blocks? I usually get EK but the Phanteks one looks nice.

Also, is there much difference between 3000 and 3200? There's a big price difference! I'll initially be running 128GB with a view to move to 256GB down the line.

What’s the probability that a 48 core 3980 is on the cards?

I don’t know how feasible it is to add more in the empty space near the other chips.

Annoyingly I can't find any 128GB kits which are 4x32GB DIMMs. So I think I'll stick to 128GB, but that then opens up the fact I could use a 3950X instead. Bah! Then again my lab is using 120 GB at the minute so 256GB may be the only (expensive) option.

In which case get the 8x 32GB kit of Corsair RAM CMK256GX4M8E3200C16 or buy four of the 2x 32GB kits at the same time CMK64GX4M2E3200C16 total cost for either option will be ~£1150. At £4.50 per GB it is good value and good performance, and great compatibility.

Yep already complained to Corsair about lack of 3000, 3200 and 3600 128G Quad kits and also suggested they make some 8 stick 256G kits, they said they will sort it but in meantime have suggested as above, just buy several dual kits if one cannot wait. We have also tested internally and adding dual kits together works just fine.

It looks like the 3960X and 3970X are using 4 chiplets on the package. The package is the same dimensions as EPYC which is designed for 8 chiplets, as we all know. 3990X will use all 8 chiplets spaces (8x8 cores), so the 3980X would use 8x6 cores.

The 3990X looks like it's intended to be an Intel-crushing Halo product done for no other reason than AMD can, the omission of 3980X right now shows AMD can cater for a 48 core model if there is a call for it.

And I tell you something, I think there will be. I see the 3990X coming in about 3 grand. At that price I can see it being in big demand for those that would make use of it. There'd be no reason then not to offer a 48 core version somewhere around £2,400

I suppose beyond possible issues that might be occurring, it’s likely that they’re holding on to these products to release later for mindshare/PR purposes when intel pushes out something next year?

The initial products are so good that AMD can hold it for those occasions when it could use an ego boost.

True, but the 3990X is confirmed for next year. That's not for ego, that's for Intel getting its threads ripped. 48 cores can be held back for ego purposes as you say.
