My main concern is cooling, as I'm not watercooled.

KitguruTech did a test recently. TLDW: use the Noctua TR4-SP3 cooler unless the Thermosiphon becomes available.

The only TR4-specific AIO cooler, the Liqtech, is one to avoid.

Yeah cooling is my only bugbear with the TR4. I think the full coverage AIOs inlcuding the coolmaster tr4 one all have bad rep.
Sounds like a lot of hope is being pinned on the Thermosiphon. I'm using an AIO and am looking for something else.

Btw @Milkybk you'll love DaVinci Resolve on the 3rd gen TR. It's a breeze! Are you running 4 sticks of 32gb ram?

I'd definitely upgrade if you can. I still have 'only' 32GB, because I migrated over to TR from an 8700K rig where 32GB was quite decent, especially as it's B-die 8Pack RAM. I wanted more even then, but when I built even that 32GB cost me over £500. Ideally I'd want 128GB but could settle for 64GB.

The only reason I mention it is, more cores need more RAM to feed them. I frequently bump into 'waiting for memory' on things like BOINC, where the system has spare CPU but the RAM is full. So yeah, if you can get more then do it.

@Milkybk , i'm using the Asus Strix TRX40-E with 64GB of 'economy' B-Die at 3600CL16. It's fine motherboard, well made. No complaints really. Wish it had at least 5GbE Ethernet but that is about it. Wow, yeah I can understand you wanting to match your ram with another lot of 8Pack's BDie, but those prices ouch!

That Video of coolers on the 3990x from KitGuru is great. The Noctua NH U14 is amazing for its size.

Just swapped out my 2950x to a 3960x which went smooth, all booted ok into windows with no drama.

Testing loads it pulls just under 600w fully loaded on the cpu and gpu (measured by the UPS) which is quite good.

Just wondering whats the typical RAM speeds that can be achieved, got my ram to a 'standard' 3200MHz C14 but its rated to 4133MHz at C19 (which I know the cpu won't do), its B-die.

Mine (Hynix DJR) are doing 3733mhz 16-19-19-39-60-480 with a 1:1 IF lock.

The number of modules you using can matter on TR - I can get better speeds with 4 dimms than 8. How many are you using?

I'm running 4 dimms, the spec of the ram is : 4133MHz 19-25-25-45 1.40v, its currently running at 3200Mhz 14-14-14-34 1.40v.

@ketma, I'm not sure what Ram you have but I imagine you can at least get up to 3600Mhz. But at 3200 cl14 you're problem quite close to 3600 performance anyway. I used the Ryzen Ram calc to fine tune my ram, worked wonders. I'm running 16-20-20-36 at 3600.

Gents. Soft tube watercooling today is easy and relative cost efficient method for the long term.
It would take you an hour tops to create your custom loop. No need for fancy things and be generous with the tube sections lengths to make everything a doodle.
You need a rad, block, pump-reservoir combo, soft tube, 6 soft tube fittings (+2 if you watercool GPU) and 1lt of premixed liquid (2lt if you use GPU). (i prefer that than mixing my own).
Cut tube to measure (be generous), line up the flow Rad - pump - GPU - CPU - rad. Use the connector (if you buy EK set is usually included) to fill up the system as per normal and let the pump run for 3-4 hours with white kitchen towel around each fitting.
If you want fit a drain pipe.

If you are careful, and leave the loop run for few hours with the towels (without anything else but pump connected), you will be safe to run the system. Leave the towels in place for 1-2 days.

Thanks for the info @Panos. I considered watercooling my rig a few months ago and actually made a thread about it on here. However I managed to get more than acceptable temps after messing around with my OC and fan curves etc. It is something I'm interested in but the sheer amount of parts available to choose from was actually quite daunting. How much would it cost to watercool both the 3970x and a 2080ti and what sort of temps would you expect to see under load (for comparison)? May as well do both!

Around £460 including EK TR4 & RTX2080Ti blocks, EK P360 rad, EK 8 soft tube fittings, D5 pump/res combo, base for it, tube, power plug and 1lt pre-mixed liquid.
