I think ATi cards have always had a more efficient memory controller/subsystem (or whatever you call it), it's just that the HD2000, HD3000 series was crippled in other ways, that it didn't really matter.

Also, I think the ATi cards still have the ring bus memory controller first introduced in the X1800 series.

The 48xx series doesn't use the ring bus.
