AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

The 4870 X2 was already gonna be a 2TF card. Actually these specs hardly change the playing field at all (maybe skew it slightly more in AMD's favour). :\

Besides, I thought the 800 shader rumour was out of date...

Only because of the rumours of a separate shader clock which hasnt materialised. But if its only 480 shaders with a core clock similar to the 4870, its only be

2 x [480 x 2 x 750,000,000] ~ 1.5 TFLOPS

Okay but there're no rumours which suggest it'll have a locked shader clock, low clock speed and only 480 shaders.

It seems the popular three configurations have been:

1050MHz core clock, synchronous shader clock, 480 shaders.
725MHz core clock, 1050MHz shader clock, 480 shaders.
725MHz(?) Core clock, synchronous shader clock, 800 shaders.

It seems very likely AMD are gunning for 1TF's on the 4870 given most of the rumoured specs, and those leaked slides on tomshardware.tw... Probably mostly for marketing reasons.

Maybe be false just like all rumours, so...

*edit8 - just incase you don't get it, it implies that the RV770 doesn't have a separate clock domain and instead has 800 "stream Procs" to reach rumoured 1 teraflop mark.

I doubt it, it would go against everything we have heard so far. Price/die size, the future been a number of smaller dies and not just a big powerful chip etc.

anyone got a date for when i can buy 4870 model in the UK @OCUK along with nehalem which is due out soon ?

and on the side do i need ddr3 with nehalem ?

There wont be a shader clock. Its by far not simple to implement it in an architecture that was not designed with that in mind.

800sps make more sense than that, as SPs in R6xx were rumoured to be cheap to implement. The true question is now whether the TMUs are 32.

25th of june is suppose to be the date for the 4870. Nehalem will be the closer to the end of the year, or early '09.

Selling below cost with the intent of weakening the competition in the market is highly illegal. No rational business as mentioned would intentionally give up profits and therefore if nvidia did do that, their motives become clear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predatory_pricing

With the EUs aggressive stance on anti-comtetitive behaviour, nvidia would never consider such a policy.

That is absurd.

The 4850 is intended for a lower market segment and price bracket, that's been said about 1000x in this very thread.

did you even read my post? my point was the 4870 not 4850. I understand 4850 is gonna be slower than the 2 nvidia cards but then it doesnt sound good for the 4870

WHy would it not sound good for the 4870? It's destined to be a low-cost, high performing unit that should be on a par or greater as an 8800GTX for considerably less cash. It's the 4870 X2 thats going to be providing the high-end grunt. :)
