AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

will it be a complete waste to cross fire these 4850 or 4870's in anything other than 2 x16 slots.

what will the downside be of doing a crossfire on a P45 based board at 2 x 8

in real world terms, not theretical assumptions

Just another topic to keep us going till next week.

Bowza

I thought PCI V2 was 2X V1. So V2 8X = V1 16X

Either way I doubt you would see much difference between 8x and 16x.

Well according to the early/leaked reviews there is no performance hit from running two 4850's in crossfire on 8x slots.

Don't forget that the p45 boards are pci-e 2 slots not 1.0 or 1.1.

8 x pci-e 2 = 16 x pci-e 1 in bandwidth so your question is as good as asking "is there any point running one 4850 or 4870 in my 16x pci-e 1.1 slot?"

Snap

Ah right, so now to decide which single GFX card to buy then :p won't be upgrading mobo for a while yet.

What about crossfire on a P35 mobo ?

As said, not advisable. The slots are 16x and 4x pci-e 1 so your second card will be running at only 4x and will be crippled.

the bandwidth of the 4x pci-e 1 slot is the equivalent of a 2x pci-e 2 slot so as you can see you will get 4 times the bandwidth on your 2nd card on a p45 board or more to the point, exactly the same bandwidth as your 16x pci-e slot on your p35 board.

To see how much it's cuts performance, try putting your card in your 2nd pci-e slot and run some benchies. It will be even worse performance in crossfire.

Ah I see thanks, why the heck did they put a 4x slot in the bottom I will never understand... I might just change mobo then as well because of this, I could do with a few more onboard USB2 ports as well and I am not a fan of the JMICRON controller on the P5K !

21 minutes to go from "not changing motherboard for a while" to "I might just change...." :D

Not bad for this forum :p

Oh and to answer your 2nd question, the pci-e 16x slot is connected to the p35 chip. The 2nd pci-e 4x slot is really four 1x slots bonded together and connected to your southbridge chip. It was just put in there for anything which might need a 4x pci-e slot and not really intended for grpahics/crossfire. Didn't stop some motherbaord manufacturers advertising them as crossfire boards which although technically they are, the gains would just not be worthwhile.

:p So which P45 board should I upgrade to? I see a Asus P5Q Pro on offer atm on ocuk, or would another one be a better choice? my budge is around £100 give or take :p cheers!

Hmm I'd rather buy new than used for the guarantee alone! - I'll et a single GFX card first because It's not clear on the pricing yet either for both nvidia and AT as I may just end up getting a GTX260/280 as I don't ideally want a 512MB card due to running all games at 1920x1200. I can then upgrade to a better mobo if needed I guess.

I'd look for a used X38/X48 mobo before the P45 series.

I don't see why. Reviews of p45 boards showing them to be as good performers as the x38/x48.

Yes x38/x48 are techically better boards but I would always prefer new with a mobo rather than risk 2nd hand.

Google and search on here. I think there is a review of the Asus p5q deluxe and comes out great. Deluxe and above have the 16 phase power for stability and overclocking.

If i was to crossfire 2 4870's would i have access to 1024mb of memory?

Also will just 1 4870 be a decent upgrade from a 8800gts?

Well each card has 1Gb of memory so that is what each card will be using.

It is looking likely that it will be a decent upgrade. 4850 is meant to be 30% quicker than a 8800GT so about 10-15% quicker than a 8800GTS. The 4870 is meant to be 30% quicker than a 4850 so expect around 40% I would guess.

Anyway, full reviews will be out soon so you will soon know for sure. ;)

Havent really been keeping up with this thread been more into the nvidia thread and did plan on getting one today but looks like i'll be jumping ship to ati this time.

I thought the 4870 came with 512mb memory so i was wrong and its 1gb or is it the 4870x2 that comes with 1gb as standard?

AFIK 4870 comes with 1gb of ddr5 memory

Just seen a 4850 on the US Bay for £101.00.....lol

I have never been so damned impatient for something in my life. If I have another week of booting up with a 7200GS, I will curl into the foetal position and rock backwards and forwards.
