Lol wth with Rx480 thing, it delivered what amd promissed and i don't remember Amd advertising it as 1080 killer or smthng. Now some sites did it cause of clicks but it wasn't amd, so stop with that 'oh remember rx480' nonsense

You obviously didn't follow the 480 / Polararis thread then

Gibbo had to step-in and dampen the pre-release hype :p

I did. It was just wccf stiring the pot and some users getting excited.
Polaris was pegged by AMD themselves as midrange and mainstream performance. That was it before release.

Thing was while AMD were adamant they were targetting the mid-range at the same time they were dropping little performance hints like the locked down demo that suggested it was a faster card.

It was what, maybe 2 vocal individuals getting overexcited out of 50+ contributors to the thread. Everyone else was being realistic. Perhaps a couple of stirrers encouraging it for giggles.

So they advertised their card in a positive light? The little performance hints weren't claims of beating the tier above or anything it was just "better for a good price at 1080p and can do VR". Which it was (no 1060 then)/is now - apart from in the UK due to the pound.

The only people who extrapolated were the manic (flopper in his lovable way) or the stirrers who like to offer vast claims prerelease and then denounce when it doesn't achieve those absurdities to get a reaction.

In the end, AMD let the hype get out of control. People expected more, and were disappointed. AMD still haven't even addressed the fact that there was no intention to make a high end Polaris (ie RX490), and effectively skipped the high end for that generation.

Because AMD didn't control the message, the only narrative that got out there were sites like WCCF that simply spun up the hype, fake news and click-bait.

However nothing they said suggested there was to be a larger Polaris. All the official news was Polaris 10 and 11 followed by Vega. They also stated they were targeting the minimum VR spec with Polaris and making it 'affordable' (questionable imo - irrespective of the poor £/$). That was the extent of their ambitions for Polaris. It seemed pretty clear.

14 hours to go :) getting excited

Don't get too excited, just lately AMD have made a lot of noise about reveals and announcements to then not actually reveal anything, like just show a game running and then say "Vega is running that game"

My GPU averages 65-68 FPS at same location overclocked at 2088/5500.

Another Straw, a desperate one. You say that after linking to a youtube showing a 2000/5500Mhz 1080 not getting anywhere near that, your 1080 is way faster than anyother 1080 then....

This is not looking good for Vega or NVidia would have launched the 1080 Ti.

But the GTX 1060 is the same price as the 480 and also just matches the 970 :-/

Er... have you looked at the prices? It actually costs a tad more. I'd agree with you on 3GB (gimped) 1060 vs 4GB 480s, but not quite so for the 8GB 480 vs 6GB 1060.

Also, Nvidia not having any 1080ti's to show at CES doesn't mean jack about Vega. It's not like Nvidia have to reveal their new GPU in advance like AMD do, I barely remember much was shown in advance about the 980ti. If I recall, the launch was kind of a surprise if only considering what Nvidia showed off at conferences. 1080ti can still be on the way. Or, AMD get lucky and 1080ti doesn't release before Vega and steal its thunder, like the 980ti did for Fury(X).
