AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Vega isn't Polaris - honestly from looking at Polaris and looking around - less I think its a shrunk tonga too. It has tonga parts but looks more like it was born out of making PS4 Pro graphics - way it scales etc - along with the fact it looked to be pipecleaner for 14nm.

Lots of rumors still have rumor of small vega coming in possibly next month; but again still rumor - few other water cooler rumors vega coming sooner than we've been lead to believe etc........we'll just wait and see

I agree it's just the Polaris 10 downclocked at it's optimum, just like m295x is Tonga's optimum for apple. It's not an exact shrunken down tonga, it is tweaked throughout, however the main core logic of the front end only differs to Tonga by having 2x hws and 4 less ace units.

If Vega isn't Polaris scaled up then like I said brilliant, but if it is then peoples expectations on price and performance are realistic in this thread.

Right, AMDMatt will pass that up Lisa Su and AMD will have things back on track in no time :p;)

On a serious note, I do think you are underestimating how much of an benefit doing well at the high end has.
No i don't underestimate how much of a benefit doing well at the high end has NV is right there showing us how much it benefits them and thats the thing, AMD don't do well at the high end against NV which history has shown us time and time again and you cant have all the perception and brand image and execution issues which AMD has and just release a high end card and do well against the competition and that's why AMD is trying a different strategy this time.
AMD themselves said that they want to get rid of been seen as the budget brand and that's because there high end cards don't sell enough compared to NV, so lower the price to sell more.

But now there is a doubled edged sword in order to not been seen as the budget brand you have to charge more or nearly equal to the competition and many people who can afford to buy in that price range will buy the more expensive Brand just because it more expensive because it cost more it must be better, so AMD has tried to charge more for there high end cards, but there Legacy means that cant benefit yet from it.

So you are expecting the Vega cards to be mid range cards then? I guess you are not the only one, many here think Vega will be 1070/80 at best. If this is AMD's new strategy it may end up being my last AMD card ever, as they will never be making a card aimed at me which is the 1070/80 £300-400 tier.

I do not think this is the case at all. Unless all Vega is, is a scaled up Polaris, which for me would be disappointing indeed.

Well they will be a budget brand permanently unless they make high end cards no? lol :p

Hence why I think Vega will be better than what people expect. They just need to play it clever as I explained before and price one very high, then the card below have it be 10-15% slower and charge a reasonable amount for it. That is what I would do. That would both satisfy both their core customers and the people who want the best and don't mind paying for it.

The problem is they don't have enough core customers hence the market share issue they have.

And the people who want the best and don't mind paying for it buy NV.

They have been making high end cards for years, where have you been.

lol. We are talking about the future here, not the past. You just said they don't do well on selling high end cards and that they have changed their strategy.

Yes but the strategy you have been putting forwards has been tried time and time again by AMD already, but it seems you were not around and completely unaware as you think that they have not had high end cards.

You clearly not been reading my replies properly then. Here is where I have been:

RIVA TNT
GeForce4 MX440
Radeon 9700 Pro
GeForce 7900 GT
GeForce 8800 GTS
Radeon 4870
Radeon 5770
Radeon 5850
Radeon 6970
Radeon 7950
GeForce 670
Radeon 7970
Radeon 290
Radeon 295x2
GeForce 1070

Yes and that strategy was working fine for them in my opinion. They just needed to be more ruthless on marketing. I was happy buying AMD only cards for like nearly a decade as they were always best price for performance. Never had issues with driver either, until I tried CrossFire :p

If there strategy was working fine they would not be in the state they are in.
And the second point its not just about what you would buy its about what the majority would buy and clearly the majority have not been buying the AMD cards.

Dude, you do know AMD sell more than graphics cards right? To my knowledge it is the CPU side of things that let them down financially, not the GPU. Sure Nvidia usually had the edge, but not as much as they have lately. As AMD did not do well, it meant less R&D money. Hell if AMD's graphics division was doing so poorly how comes they are in consoles and not Nvidia?

Look, end of the day what you think or what I think or say won't make no difference.

I said what it will take for me to buy AMD and that is that really :)

Ok we are done LOL.

Yeah, I agree.

AMD is so far behind Nvidia that I'm afraid they will never be able to catch up to green team. They will end up offering middle segment cards etc etc.

AMD needs to make high end cards for the professional market so consumer versions will exist.

Lol i ordered a Dell Precision workstation for work for some CAD stuff and it came with a 1080 FE in it, sad thing is Dell didnt ship it with an 8pin PCIE power cable, just 2 x 6pin and no adapter, so its been sat next to my desk for about 2 weeks unable to do anything, i probably have an adapter i can use, its a shame the cards going to spend the next 3 years sat in that PC getting used about once every 6 months lol.

If only AMD had that problem...

Why don't you replace your current 290 with it
