I wonder if hbcc would see games using more memory than they need too? Say yiu have a 16ghbm vega card and turn on hbcc you could see tombraider using 20gb of video memory usage at 4k max settings. That would keep kaap happy? Lol

Kaap might need to buy the SSG version that has 16GB HBM2, and 1TB NVMe with HBCC on it. :P

What's also interesting is how Vega Frontier matches up against NVIDIA's new Telsa V100.
~20% faster while not available until near end of the year, costing significantly more; and being dramatically larger.
~510mm2 vs 815mm2

It's also PCIe vs NVLINK; the V100 PCIe card will be slower than the NVLINK one, just like the P100 NVL was faster than the PCIe.

Never mind the V100 has a yield of 1 per 12" wafer; that cost will be massive, and supply low. Which is why NVIDIA were taking pre-orders already. It's essentially built to order.

Outside of NVIDIA's new Tensor Processors for mixed precision workloads, Vega actually looks really decent in comparison, especially given the size and R&D budget.

Vega is totally missing the same level of F 64F performance for starters
 
Same here! If it's 10% slower in averages, but has improved minimums over 1080Ti, I'll be very happy.
I look forward to reviews, especially in video work as well; AMD is already good there; and seeing the compute on Vega I hope to get a smashing card.

This is a very good point. I'd also be happy to lose a few frames at the top end if the bottom end was much higher. Combined with Zen having higher min FPS in a lot of cases than the Intel equivalents, this could be a very good combination.

Firstly, AMD have said you can utilise FP16 for certain calculations in gaming, like hair simulation. And there's also a video floating around showing off the PS4 (I think, might be Xbone) using FP16 I THINK in Prey? Basically having 2xFP16 means more FPS in engines that take advantage of it for some calculations.

Secondly as for what V100 is for, really it's for FP64 and the new deep-learning TensorFlow work. Vega is crap for those two tasks, but yes will be better in pretty much all other tasks (certainly from a cost perspective) than V100.

AMD said there'll be a "Vega 2.0" on 7nm, with more and faster HBM, that has proper FP64 performance and possibly some Tensor optimisations too now that Nvidia have done that and it's becoming huge.


EDIT: Also it's interesting on the AMD Vega product page, it says the card has 480 GB/s bandwidth. So must mean the HBM2 memory is running at 1875 MHz. This is faster than Hyinx were listing, as people were pointing out. And also faster than Nvidia have got from Samsung, since they're using double the stacks but getting 900 GB/s for V100. So that'd be 1750 MHz.

VEGA is more towards pro consumer market than gaming. AMD VEGA will not even properly beat GTX 1080 leave alone GTX 1080 TI in 95% of gaming titles.

You realise the official line is the Titan X and Xp are also "deep learning/pro" cards, and therefore so is the 1080 Ti.

All there really is to it is how many Tflops does it have, and how efficiently can it utilise those Tflops.

Vega has 13+ Tflops (and also 26+ Tflops FP16, which can be used in niche cases), so it has the potential to be good.

Like above you do understand Vega has 7 GPUs plus Titan was once not seen has a Gaming GPU now its Nvidia top rated Gaming GPU, seeing the Ti is built on the same spec that is also not a gaming GPU then loool

If you bother about energy efficiency in GPU, please go buy the GTX1080Ti.
But you will have to use it for the next 40 years at 365/7-8h per day at 100% load constant, to pay the price difference through the energy savings.

Writing that because the last time some here were bashing AMD about the energy consumption, was the GTX780Ti/Titan Black against the R9 290X!

And had proven with pure arithmetic, that it would have taken 40y 365/7/8h at 100% load constant to pay the price difference via energy savings, of the GTX780Ti to the 290X, and 90 years for the Titan Black. (while the 290X is faster).

With the top of the range cards lifespan 2-3 years max, any energy consumption and efficiency argument is NULL AND VOID.
Go buy an AMD APU if you want maximum efficiency and something better than the Intel IGP.

The fuse on the router's power plug died yesterday, so I've not been able to get on the internet till now.
What did I miss? Is Vega coming in June? Is it good? Or are we doomed? (flicking through the past few pages of this thread it sounds like AMD showed off some non-gaming GPU instead?)

It was always about non-gaming as it's investors and not the gaming market.

However we've had snippets and it's looking pretty good for AMD right now if they have the correct pricing strategy to performance numbers.

As others have said. I am ready to take 10% less top fps numbers for mins that are 3x what the competition is able to do.

With that, we don't know which GPU was running the demo but assume at moment it was the card they were discussing directly so if the consumer card can click higher we may still see greater than 1080ti numbers.
 
Well I watched the entire presentation, and thought it was really good showing for AMD. Clearly admitting their failings, showing how they were going to address them, in both the GPU and CPU spaces, and not excusing themselves from being absent. The way ahead has been made pretty clear, and AMD are back and will become a serious enterprise competitor to Intel and Nvidia, and if we are lucky may even show Nvidia a thing or two in the enthusiast GPU market place.

The fact that they are showing HBCC off, and that is is designed for when applications would have normally outgrown your current graphics card, and with HBCC that is no longer going to be true. I hope they are going to allow/give some professional reviews the option to limit the VRAM and turn off/on HBCC like they do in the demos to highlight how successful it is in the real world.

The Titans have always been about gaming. Can we please drop this myth that nVidia marketed them as compute or workstation cards?

It's simply not true. When nVidia introduced the Titan, everything was about how it was the ultimate gaming experience or words to that effect. They didn't reference compute or workstations. It was gaming, and the ultimate gaming GPU.

So if the competition is doing 4k at 60 FPS average and 21 FPS minimum, you're willing to accept 54FPS average as long as the minimum is at least 63FPS???

I'm pulling your leg, but my point is that everyone must dial things down a notch on the HBCC. I'm just glad it seems to work via drivers (without the game code needing to be changed). Such assumptions on performance are just hype.
 
They can release gaming VEGA at computex with availability right away or a short time after. I don't think Frontier Edition launch date is related to when gaming cards launch. The Frontier Edition release date might be related more to 16gb hbm2 than imo.

I just read the comments and HBCC seems to be very good, but won't get excited until I see it used on a few dozen games.
