AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Honestly do people really think that big vega won't beat a 1080? :o

I will be extremely surprised if AMD can't beat the 1080, just look at how a 2 year old fury x is competing with a 1070 and it even beats a 1070 in a fair amount of games (not to mention the difference in dx 12/vulkan titles....)

So yeah, if AMD/vega can't match/beat a 1080, then there must be something seriously wrong....
Yep, many here think this. I don't get it to be honest.

Well if this damn thing had launched when it was supposed to with a couple of cards having performance levels equalling the 1070 & 1080 but with a $50-$100 price reduction then it would have picked up lots of sales but the fact is, it's late, very late and such performance/price metrics today will be viewed as very underwhelming and will lead to a lot of people saying..'is that it?'.

We're probably only 6mths away from a (paper) launch of Volta and 8mths from being able to buy one, which will be another generational leap over anything AMD will have.

This delay on Vega is going to hurt AMD again, big time, luckily for them they at least have the new Ryzen's bringing in the cash to keep them going.

I'm a big Nvidia fanboy and I do hope AMD knocks it out of the park with Vega. They would be mad not to have a card that is competitive with the 1080 at least. Their current top-end is already on par with a 1060 iirc, of course their next offering is going to be a step beyond that. I can see their highest end card being competitive with the 1080, maybe even faster.

The 480/580 are on par with GTX 1060, the Fury is in between that and 1070, and the Fury X is just below 1070, but matches and beats in some newer titles.

The Fury X is clocked at 1050Mhz stock, and if Vega is 1500Mhz, that should without a doubt be able to get to the GTX 1080.

Hell a Fury X clocked at ~1400Mhz matches a 2Ghz 1080 in Firestrike alone; so if Vega was just a die shrunk Fiji with higher clock it should get to GTX 1080 levels without issue.

Guys don't worry, AMD will have cards that are competitive with the 1070/1080 AND the Ti (even if the last one they trade blows at DX11 and DX12). Vega will be better at the same or lower pricing and then early next year Volta will come and pip Vega too and then Navi etc etc. Not long to go now for some solid info :)

I'm not worried, just wondering how people can think it'll be so slow.

If top Vega sits between 1080 and 1080Ti I'll be super happy. Amazing gaming performance and it'll smash the Titan XP in all the productivity programs I use then.

Depending on price I might get my old man one for his little SolidWorks machine as well. Originally was going to get him a Titan, but since a cheaper Vega would be far better while being significantly cheaper than a Quadro, that costs more than his entire workstation.

Its more complicated... the Vega is not just a Fiji die shrink. CLK to CLK the Vega is gonna be slower than the Fiji.Vega gonna be more ballanced, with a new backend, its not just 2X 480/580,its a complet new arch. next level GCN.The performance its gonna be the similar to (may a bit slower) 1080Ti,but more ballanced not like a Fiji before, and its not gonna avaible in wide till august/late august.

The gist is that we all want Vega to be as fast as possible, competition benefits all of us. If Vega is fast enough, the days of £650+ 1080tis will be a fading memory.

Sauce ? Where did you get the "CLK to CLK the Vega is gonna be slower than Fiji" ?

36 days until we have to amend the thread title...

I'll probably stick to green team but really hoping it's either quicker than 1080 or on par but significantly lower pricing. If the best thing it does for me is lower the market prices then happy days ;)

We're probably only 6mths away from a (paper) launch of Volta and 8mths from being able to buy one, which will be another generational leap over anything AMD will have.

With the differences between professional/gaming chips, does it not mean that the two are essentially totally different production lines?

What I mean is, it is not possible to take 'bad V100s' and bin them as gaming chips, right?

The reason I am saying this is that don't believe this will be the case (8m to gaming Voltas). The V100 is huge and has terrible yields, so if there is pressure from customers I doubt TSMC will be able to produce both gaming and professional cards. At least not in significant quantities. And we all know were the margins are.

I must be the most skeptical person around here, but I think it is 8m before we see the FE card at a very high price, while AIB partners will be left in the cold again...

To put it another way: AMD will be producing FE chips and binning 'bad ones' to make 1200MHz models that are sold as gaming cards, or lower-shader count models that slot in below the top-of-the-line models. As with Polaris, we will be getting the 'bad chips' in gaming but at least we will have them.

Nvidia will probably not be able to do that and TSMC will be busy producing V100 chips that can't be used for gaming... I may be wrong but that's how I understand things to be.

Yup that is right, V100 wont be in any gaming card ever, unless Nvidia decided to do it 'for fun'. And by fun I mean the joy of being able to display an expensive and exclusive component with no purpose.

So basically you want AMD to come in cheap to lower the price of the Nvidia products you want to buy? But you don't want to actually buy AMD. other people can put their hands in their pocket to support them. You just want cheaper Nvidia cards.... Hmm.

TSMC will be busy producing V100 chips that can't be used for gaming...

They have I believe 3 fabs that can run "12nm" lines if required - depending on what was economical for nVidia - also they might be able to do like with shuttle services and stick 1x V100 and then fill the rest of the space with smaller Volta on the same wafer to make better use of it than the otherwise inevitable wastage.
