AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

Wasn`t it the same hype 2 years ago when the 1st gen Ryzen launched? I mean leaks were everywhere, with some bad & some good, but I still applaud AMD for changing the market forever.

It depends on how close they are in the ability to port over from x86, and completing their own silcon design. I've ran modified OSX just fine on a Ryzen 1600 and B350 board, with so little effort if Apple wanted to do it, it would take them weeks not years to accomplish this. It also depends on the impact that Zen2 has in the market place, if it becomes the clearly leader in core/speed/IPC in the next 12 months then it would be crazy to thing they have not considered it.
Apple tend to go with mobile-class CPUs in all their mainstream products; a sector which AMD still isn't so great in. I think they will concentrate on replacing these with their own silicon (the latest iPad Pro is already impressive performance-wise) and stick with Xeon-class monsters in high-end creative workstations (where value-for-money has never been a consideration).

iMac and Mac Mini use desktop class CPU's, Macbook obviously use mobile parts. Nothing wrong with the current generation of AMD SKU's for mobile, and that is only going to get better as the year goes forward. A 6c/12t CPU with 15w TDP is on the cards, as well as the 8c/16t 45w which is what would be in a Macbook Pro for example, can you imagine how fast modern non-MacOS laptops will be with these, as I said Apple would have to be at least considering this as an option unless they are ready to launch MacOS 11 with ARM in mind.

Edit: Take a look at the following CPU AMD R7 3750H https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-7-3750h

35w 4c/8t with an RX Vega 10 class GPU 2.3GHz base, and 4GHz boost. Pretty unique at present.

I thought Apple would have bought AMD years back, it's not like they have the money and could use the CPU's/GPU's - as well as still selling to other OEMS/channel.

It has been clarified millions of times that AMD cannot be sold because its greatest asset, the x86 license, is not transferable.

:D

Just days away gents!

Just out of curiosity though, which if the rumored cpu's will you be planning on getting (if you are planning on getting one at all)?

Personally, I think the 3600 is more than enough for me, especially with an overclock, 8c/12t should last me a long time with those crazy clock speeds. For those people wanting the chips with more cores/higher clock speeds, what do you guys intend on using the power of those chips for?

Ryzen 7 3700. Given the 3700X can do 5ghz through XFR, then if you don't care about power consumption, should get high 4.Xghz on all cores easily.

The pattern set by Ryzen 1xxx/2xxx is that you should be able to get all cores to just below the highest XFR. 1800X did 4.0 and 2700X does 4.2.

Worse binning probably will mean the 3700 will be 100/200mhz worse at overclocking than the 3700X, if history is anything to go by.

Las Vegas – CES 2019

01/06/2019
Today, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) announced the first members of its 2019 mobility line-up encompassing all notebook segments: 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen 3000 Series Mobile Processors powering ultrathin and gaming notebooks; AMD Athlon 300 Series Mobile Processors powering mainstream notebooks with the fast and efficient “Zen”3 core; and optimized 7th Gen AMD A-Series processors, elevating performance for mainstream Chromebooks. So no information on Ryzen 3xxx desktop parts then.

Although this might be entirely a mobile focused press release.

Then again this press release hints this is what the CES keynote is about.

At CES 2019, Dr. Lisa Su, president and CEO, AMD is delivering a keynote address, scheduled for Wednesday, January 9 at 9:00 a.m. in the Venetian Palazzo Ballroom. Also, for all CES 2019 attendees, the latest AMD mobile portfolio and technologies are available for hands-on viewing at Club AMD located in the Venetian Expo Sands Titan 2303 – 2305 from January 8th to 11th. Visit www.amd.com/en/events/ces for more information.

I think any Zen 2 keynote would have resulted in more leaks by now.

So what's people's planned builds for Zen2? I'm hoping for a decent Itx mobo, I want to downsize from my Enthoo Primo, got my eyes on the Evolv Shift case, can put a 240 AIO in that with a 3700X and hopefully a decent Itx board. Can't wait! :)

AMD themselves suggested there would be something regarding 7nm CPUs and GPUs, these mobile chips from what I understand are on 12nm not on 7nm... so would be surprising if that was all they will be presenting. Also wouldn't make much sense to pull your own rug from underneath you by releasing the most anticipated press release before your big key note.

edit - says it right there in the press release actually, 12nm. So yeah, I still expect announcements regarding 7nm Zen 2.

Was going to post about that too as Phoronix has post up about it https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ryzen-3000-Series-Mobile

Zen 2 Threadripper 32 core
X499 Mobo
128 GB RAM
2x Titan RTX Nvlink
everything watercooled with EKWB / watercool.de parts
3x NVMe SSDs
8x 8TB WD Red in RAID6
some more stuff. new mouse, fans, nvlink bridge, yada yada. oh, obsidian 1000D case and 2000W superflower PSU.

Does anyone remember which one we were not supposed to get PCIE 4 or 5? Wasnt the rumors way back when, consumers are not getting PCIE 4 because PCIE 5 is coming so soon ather 4?

Again nothing confirmed, but that Gigabyte slide indicated that "Matisse" is an "all PCIe Gen4 solution". If this is true then Ryzen 3000 will be PCI-E 4. EPYC Rome is PCI-E 4 as we know, whether that filters down into the desktop products remains to be seen.

Bear in mind though that just because a spec is ratified doesn't mean it'll actually show up any time soon. Gen4 was officially announced mid 2017, but nothing showed up using it for another year. AMD touted Vega 20 Instinct is the first PCI-E 4 GPU, and that was end of 2018. I don't see any reason why Navi wouldn't use it IF Ryzen uses it, but even then we're looking at 3rd quarter of 2019, over 2 years since the spec was officially announced.

And even if Gen5 is ratified in 2019, it'll be at least a year before anything shows up.
