With a minimum 20% IPC gain and 50% more cores 120 to 170 Watts is with in that "+50% PPW"

I am a bit concerned though! Currently the Ryzen 9 5950X is a 105W TDP CPU with 16 cores. 120W would be sort of fine as you get 50% more cores,but 170W would imply power/core has risen!

So I suspect the 50% performance/watt increase will be a lower clocked 120W TDP model compared to the 105W Ryzen 9 5950X(there is also a 65W TDP 12 Core Ryzen 9 5900 too).

For one i think the high end of that prediction is AVX-512.

But ignoring that, a 24 core 48 thread CPU with a massive IPC i'm not even slightly worried at 170 Watts, Intel have churned out CPU's with less cores than that running at 400 Watts, a 12 core Zen 4 is going to be sub 100 Watt's.

I mean Christ think about this for a minute. :)
 
For the wattage, is it possible that the AM5 and the implementation Zen4 rumours are combining somehow?
Designing AM5 high-end to be 170W, or even making a 24 core monster etc. and expecting certain boards to handle that, doesn't necessarily mean that 8 core or even 12 core will be anywhere close to that.

My £160 board has a 12+2 Phase VRM, a good one, stressed it struggles to get to 60c.

Even mid range Boards like mine have completely overbuilt VRMs, they can handle 170 watts easily, its the PGA socket that can't.

I am a bit behind the times :D
Still on my i5-3570K and Z77 board, which still working nearly 8 year later.
That £80 board is the most expensive board I ever bought (although I guess the board I bought for the Celeron 300A, an Abit BH6 socket 7 - which at the time was £75 - would trump that with inflation).
Before that - certainly in the CD2 era - I used to just get £40 boards or so and £50 or so CPUs, clock them to within an inch of their life and call it a day.
Back then I would only upgrade if I could get twice the performance for the same price.
That's not going to happen any more.
However, I guess spread over 8 years it is not that bad.
When my current PC eventually breaks, I will have to face the reality of modern prices.

I had a Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 3, great board, £85 i think it was. Yea, they... they don't cost £85 anymore :( but they can get a lot more expensive before you get to the enthusiast end.

I am quite biased as I am a SFF PC fan! I just hope the "peasant" 12 core has a 65W version.

I can see them dropping Threadripper. It would make sense for them to have a larger socket in that case,so both platforms are combined into one.

This is untrue, isn't it. The current CPU supplies are way higher than what the market needs, hence all the retailers offer as many Ryzens as you would wish.

It remains a mystery what AMD is so not serious and completely fails with the GPUs supplies, though.

AM5 is meant to last a while. If RDNA3 is chiplets 170W support would mean you could have 1 8c CCD and 2x RDNA3 chiplets. Obv that will not be a zen 4 config but it could ve a zen5 config and if AMD tell mobo makers they need to support 170W from the get go it gives AMD options for future skus.
 
Or just buy a cheap part second hand to get it back up and running again? :p
Well since CPUs are near indestructible, the question is where would a find a reliable LGA1155 board in 2021+?
Plus, after not buying for so long I would probably see it as an excuse to treat myself to an upgrade.
My old upgrade criteria of doubling the ST would still be hard, but any upgrade should see MT scores quadruple or more.
Maybe if I wait until Zen5 by which time DDR5 should be cheaper too!
