*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

I thought Zen 4 was always scheduled for H2 2022? So November / December this year.

Yeah, AMD only said 2022 without any references to a particular quarter. Some people (including major websites like Tom's) just assumed it will be an 18 month so expected early 2022.

2021 yes, 2022 no.

"One thing that’s certain is that the Zen 4 CPUs will release sometime in 2022. The question is, when? Tomsguide suggests the Zen 4 CPUs could launch as early as Q1 2022, although that wouldn’t leave a lot of breathing room between the release of the refreshed Zen 3 CPUs."

Since Zen 3 is poor lineup and there is no Zen 3 refresh altogether, this delay to Q4 2022 could mean only one thing - push backs caused by problems with the new manufacturing node.

Yeah they are getting Zen 4 and Zen 3D mixed-up.

Zen 3D was "going in to mass production in December 2021" later she clarified "release Q1 2022" So March.

Zen 4 was always "Late 2022" at CES that was reaffirmed by saying "Second Half 2022"

I think things got badly messed by the AMD management.
Zen 3 3D is a needless adventure.
Another hint for bad decisions - the release of the Radeon RX 6500 XT as a desktop graphics card.

They could have just left the 3D upgrade to go with the Zen 4 lineup, and not hurry to make middle steps in-between, like bridges to fill the gap between Zen 3 and Zen 4.

Zen 3 also lacks more models in the lineup - it simply leaves too much room to Intel to catch up and gain the lost DIY market share..

Zen 3D (in Ryzen form) are just salvaged Milan-X CCD's, IE ones that didn't make the very high silicon grade requirements for Milan-X, that's really all mainstream and HEDT CPU's are.

Not quite good enough to put in a data-centre? flog them to gamers.

Buy an RTX 3050. If you can find one. There is an RTX 2060 in stock, only £550 and it has 16 PCIe lanes and 6GB of VRam. That is what you want right?

I see, that is a fifth model in the Ryzen 5000 lineup, starting with Ryzen 5 5600X (65W), then 5800X, 5900X and 5950X (all of which 105W).

So, there are no (new) Ryzen 3, there are also no (new) XT versions of all the rest.

Zen 3 competes good enough despite being out a year already, no need for a refresh.

It’s no secret that AMD are focussing on data centre where they are gaining market share, desktop comes later using failed bins when they have big enough supply. 5nm is supposed to be doing great already, yields really good according to MLID.

Only getting 5800X3D as only using chiplets that don’t make Milan-X grade and they need to do something with them.

HEDT is left as it is as Intel gave up competing in that space for now, so no incentive to take away from Milan.

6500XT was a laptop GPU put on desktop at realistic $200 msrp gives an option at least other than used or APU for budget gamers.

AMD wants to time their launch of the AM5 platform with DDR5 availability
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/a...desktop-pcs-ddr5-pricing-impacts-release-date

Based on an interview that Tom's Hardware had with AMD’s David McAfee, they are concerned with DDR5 memory availability, pricing and the PMIC shortage that some are having.

It actually only says they want the desktop APU's to be released in a timely fashion, another typical terrible headline clickbait post/article.

"One of the dynamics that we do think about a great deal is how and when to introduce that AM5 ecosystem and ensure that the DDR5 supply, as well as pricing of DDR5 memory, is mature and something that's easily attainable for an end-user, and so there may be other forces beyond the product itself that slow down or meter the introduction of APUs into that AM5 socket. You know, we do expect that to be an enthusiast-first introduction. And I think we're going to have to watch very carefully just how the DDR5 transition takes place and how quickly both supply and prices come in line to make it more affordable for a mainstream consumer that might be more interested in making a product in that socket."

Who in their right mind would think they'd introduce Zen3+/RDNA2 APU's as the first part on the AM5 socket? The answer, no one with a brain.

RDNA2 desktop APUs should offer something close to RX 580 performance with a bit of luck, enough for 1080p ultra on older games and playable with setting compromises on newer ones.

The APUs are always memory throughput starved, so highly unlikely the performance will get that high.

I thought it was "Spring"? So April-June (ish)
Correct, AMD said Spring (20-03 to 21-06) so more than likely Q2.

Ryzen 7000 Zen4 CPUs coming faster than expected for an early Q3 launch according to Greymon55
https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-ryz...pus-could-launch-already-in-the-third-quarter

Computex 2022 in May could see fully unveiled Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs with a possible launch date in either July/August 2022.
AM5 motherboards are soon ready for production and early samples will ship out within this month according to the leaker.

I see what's going on here, Zen 4 will be launched at Computex with availability in July.

Zen 4 will be DDR5 only but to give people a DDR4 option Zen 3 will get a 6nm refresh, probably sooner than July tho.
