AMD Zen 5 rumours

9600X and 9700X are available to pre order on OCUK

9600X is £269.99
9700X is £338.99
Near double what I paid for a 7700.. kekw for sure on that.

Maybe the reason they pushed for longer AM5 support is because they knew Zen 5 was a dud

I am still rocking an I7 9700K and considering an upgrade. Was waiting on these to release and then the X3D version before deciding

Better than I expected tbh. £300 (unlikely) to £320 I thought would have been a decent price but was expecting more like £370.

Have ordered one along with memory and mobo to upgrade an old 9900K based system. Should last me another 5+ years for work/occasional gaming

Yeah man, best for you to wait :)
Indeed, I am in no rush so can wait it out if needed.

What mobo did you go for?

Was tempted by the Asus Strix B650E-F but went with the Asus Prime X670E-Pro WIFI (Socket AM5) instead
Memory wise, went with Corsair Vengeance 32GB EXPO (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MH

Same board and ram I was going to go for as well.

Really debating if I want PCIE gen 5 along with storage

Yes. Said this before: great that AM5 has good longevity but if Zen 4 to Zen 5 is less then the refresh of Zen 1 to Zen 1+, then that's one gen of useless longevity.

After a 20+ months cadence to only get this is pretty poor too. While the x86 vendors sleep, ARM vendors are going to overtake them soon.

I know the x86 baggage is real, but it took the ARM lot so long to get decent memory bandwidth and connectivity. Yes, fast memory and PCIe have a power cost but at this stage desktop ARM is only a matter of time and on servers the 128+ core designs are already a thing and plenty of workloads are fine with them.

Given the MRSP for the 9700X is $359 (ex sales tax) stateside £339 (inc VAT) is a fair price when you account for sales tax/VAT. Ex-vat the 9700X is £282.50 converted into $ @ 1.29 and it's comes out at $364 so no gouging.

That is not correct. Zen 5 is a significant change of architecture to Zen 4. This has been widely reported on. Where is the expected performance uplift? Good question, but the lead architecture of Zen 1-> 5 (Mike Clarke) said that software changes will be needed to fully leverage the hardware. Also see the linux results from phoronix, they're impressive.

ARM may overtake x86 in servers, at which point a lot of the legacy in x86 will likely get cut. I don't think AMD really care if x86 dies though, it's not like ARM & x86 CPU's are THAT different. Their knowledge is 99% transferrable to making an ARM ISA hugely performant.
