AMD Zen 5 rumours

Once any CPU requires software changes to achieve its potential it generally is a lost cause.

Which isn't too day that compilers will order different code in the future but so that gets next to no sales.

At least from consumers. Servers running Linux and HPC still benefit almost from the very beginning.

Didn't I already say Zen 5 is server first, server second etc.? Consumers don't even get the seconds.

I've just watched MLID comment on these, he has pointed out something interesting, something odd going on, half the review's look very meh, HUB, GN, TPU... the other half look pretty good, LTT, Der8auer, Toms Hardware...

For example. +12% stock for stock, +21% PBO.

My 7800 XT needs some more umph for Star Citizen, i'm not changing my AM4 platform for AM5 until next year, too much expense going on for the rest of the year.

I have a 5800X and i'm actually starting to eye one of these up...

That is not correct. Zen 5 is a significant change of architecture to Zen 4. This has been widely reported on. Where is the expected performance uplift? Good question, but the lead architecture of Zen 1-> 5 (Mike Clarke) said that software changes will be needed to fully leverage the hardware. Also see the linux results from phoronix, they're impressive.

ARM may overtake x86 in servers, at which point a lot of the legacy in x86 will likely get cut. I don't think AMD really care if x86 dies though, it's not like ARM & x86 CPU's are THAT different. Their knowledge is 99% transferrable to making an ARM ISA hugely performant.
The post from @Robert896r1 gives an good explanation why were not seeing the IPC gains being realised where Zen 5 is bottlenecked by it's infinity fabric. Seems ludicrous that AMD would put all that time and money into developing a brand new and improved architecture only to have throttled by not changing the IO die so it can realise those gains.

It could be AMD have designed Zen5 after seeing the threat from ARM and focused squarely on making it as efficient as possible.

The price of the 7600/X at high resolution gaming is just too hard to beat.

The 7800X3D is awesome but it is needs to show more FSP gain to warrant the premium at higher resolutions. Of course this is based on a sole gaming use case.

I guess that means you won't be buying my 7950X3D then!

I'm all for the low power / cool / quiet direction, no rush though so will let the other models come out, and motherboards, and gpus, then see what's what. Might even know something about Windows 12 by then.

Lol @5800x3d kicking 9700x's behind :))

Good job!
I don't get this statement. The X3D chips are always faster than the non X3D counterparts. From the chart posted above the 5800X3D is faster than some zen 4 chips, so what is your point here?

eh? I really dont get that comment.

I would almost expect new architecture to need adaptations in software in order to get the best out of them. Was that not the case with Intels P/E core architecture ? It took a change in the scheduling to get the best out of it. So what would be difference when it comes of Zen 5?

Do x3d to start with, maybe a couple of regular chips where/if needed. Stop doing silly stuff and milk the market over and over again. Basically don't turn into Intel.

With a platform that's a few gens back and old, "slow" memory, the old/grandpa chip still holds its own and... is cheaper :)) But hey, everyone is free to "upgrade" and then go on and complain about the price of GPUs. The irony is truly not lost on that! :)) Even the 7800x3d is "blazing" fast at ... 13.48% with an 4090 at 1080p!!! The platform costs?! Lolworthy. CPU space is even a bigger joke than the GPU one!

This makes me feel like unless AMD bring some new technology to the X3D parts they may be quite disappointing as well. If the 9700x can’t really better the 7700x then surely adding 3D cache to it will just mean you get 7800X3D performance with maybe a few fps here and there.

Der8auer YouTube review wqs very interesting

The power draw of the 7800x3D was remarkably low compared to nearly all of the others when playing games

The first time I looked at a 7800X3D I had to double check the figures. I literally couldn’t believe the performance on offer for the power use.
