Is it still the case with 8 series boards where 2 memory sticks perform better than 4?
Aesthetically 4 sticks do look better than 2 but I suppose it comes down to performance
How much performance difference is it?I like having 4 cause it looks cool
However yes you will get best performance with two it's always the case these days
The good news is some companies sell fake sticks - Corsair sells ram sticks that are fake, they are so you can fill up all the slots for looks

I saw this and from what they say it comes down to ranking, does it say on the memory weather it is single or dual rank? And it depends on the ranking of the sticks as well no? I'm assuming this remains constant for Zen 4/5.
I went from 2 to 4 sticks so lose potential speed (max MT/s) but gain speed from now running dual rank which does make a difference according to this, so maybe it evens out-ish?

I got6 4 DIMMS running at 6400 CL32This is a complex issue. For best performance (highest stable RAM speed & tightest timings) you want a board with only 2 physical DIMM slots.
Next best will be a board with 4 physical slots, but using a kit that's only 2 DIMMS.
Absolute worst is a board with 4 physical DIMM slots and having all 4 populated.
As for the performance penalty between the above - it's not something you'd notice outside benchmarks. At 4K especially, you're not going to notice.
At 720P/1080P benchmarks in select games, you can see huge gains though, if you plan to playing at these resolutions.
They don't make it easy do they,I run four sticks of DDR4. It looks better and there's a performance benefit. Also means that I don't have to worry about specifically seeking out dual rank kits because 4 total ranks is optimal and always achieved with 4 sticks.
I know that it's different with DDR5 though, because it's a lot more difficult to run higher speeds with more than 2 DIMMS. Though I predict that situation improving in the future as things mature.
It's not usually advertised and it's a bit of a mess tbh. You can find out yourself on an existing kit with Typhoon Burner.
As far as I'm aware and internet seems to be confirming, DDR5 performance isn't affected as much by ranking anymore. Even single channel DDR5 is already not too bad, unlike it was with DDR 4. However, all DDR5 16GB and lower seem to be single rank and 32GB and higher are dual rank. Also, interesting thing about running 4 modules is that it's considerably slower than running 2 modules, even if they run full speed in both cases - 4 modules (2DPC) seem to be introducing additional latency not present with just 2 modules. At least benchmarks by Anandtech and other seem to be confirming that. And it depends on the ranking of the sticks as well no? I'm assuming this remains constant for Zen 4/5.

Seems like the 9800X3D would be a decent upgrade from a Ryzen 7700 or 7700X. Similar clock frequency and processing capability, but with lots more cache.Yep, confirmed on the AMD press video just released

@GordyR and the look of your components being upside down?
Looks like Be Quiet caseah it is. I was playing around with my new one today.
Yeah the way my desk is situated it really needs to be on the left. I was sick of having my computer on the floor so decided to go for the invertible darkbase pro 901 for this build so that I can actually see the thing.
Having everything upside down is odd for sure but I’m very pleased with the result.![]()
Don't AIO's work badly if the tubes are lower than the pump?
Great case isn’t it… makes my Lian Li Dynamic-XL feel ‘cheap’ by comparison. Looking forward to my upcoming build!
