AMD Zen 5 rumours

Relative to the cost of a high end Threadripper it might not add that much cost so could be a good differentiator as well as potentially being useful for some workloads, what they would be apart from gaming I'm not actually sure. Almost all productivity stuff I've seen (I don't pay much attention to those parts of reviews though to be fair) a higher clockspeed or more cores usually makes more difference.

Looks like Threadripper will get V Cache as well.

https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-reportedly-preparing-threadripper-and-next-gen-apus-with-3d-v-cache

I wonder what workstation apps will be accelerated with the extra cache, enough for AMD to offer on Threadripper? Might be Threadripper Pro WRX only, but looks like with the cache under the die, they can provide a more compelling use case than the original V Cache implementation.
V$ was originally done for Epyc CPUs in fact, that's how we got it for desktop, it trickled down. Their main use case was for databases, it had huge gains there (and that's pretty much it iirc). There was a whole interview about it (years after the fact) with an ex-AMD guy I think but I can't remember exactly. Or maybe it was a Forrest Norrod interview. I'm sure someone can track the exact source down.

Some good vids there for people building new systems.
If you just want your new shiny to work properly, stick with 6000 CL30 DDR5 "if" you don't want to have to learn to tune the system

i think at stock, the 9800x3d will only be 5-15% faster than the 7800x3d

my reasoning for this speculation is:
going from a 5800x to a 7700x is a 15% performance bump
going from a 5800x3d to a 7800x3d is a 20% performance bump (+5% on top of vanilla)

so, if the performance uplift of a 7700x to a 9700x is only 5%, then i would assume a 10% increase (5% + 5% for the x3d portion)
the only way i can see this improving is if zen 5 is much more efficient than zen 4 and allows the 9800x3d to keep the boost clocks higher and for longer, given that the x3d sits in between the cpu and the heat spreader

putting this out here so i can either be proven right or be laughed at when next month comes round
i would like to say...i called it

the £230 i paid for my 7800x3d still is a bargain
