*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Yeah that's a good valid point Cat.

I had £2k stashed for a rebuild, to replace mobo, cpu, ram, cooler, gpu. I bought a 1070 recently so that leaves me with approx £1600 for a Zen setup if it's decent, also I will flog my 1070 for Vega so any savings on the mobo will be welcomed.

If they are coming Q1 2017, then it shouldn't be too long til we see actual reviews and get prices and release dates I would imagine?

Probably plenty I suspect!! I am more interested in a 4C/8T SKU at some point. My system is a mini-ITX one with a Xeon E3 1230 V2.

All CPUs these days could be called SoCs, with the amount of support components that have been brought onboard.

Manufacturers price to price points - expect high end to be eye watering and el-cheapo to be cheap :p

Outside the graphics everything is onboard the CPU it appears and the chipset acts as an I/O extender it seems.

This is will make AMD mini-ITX motherboards more viable as you don't need an additional chipset taking up space - it will be something closer to the situation you have with AM1 for example.

Either way4k, 8k or even 146k is still a drop in the ocean considering the whole world worth of enthusiasts.

The stream itself wasn't for the masses, the news reports on the stream are for the masses.

But humbug was quite right the masses don't care about a old game at 720p or a modern GPU heavy game at 4k.

The SKUs with more cores will be clocked lower for sure. IPC will be the same though since it's the same architecture, unlike Intel which uses an architecture that is a generation behind for their 6+ core chips.

If the 8 core can clock to 4 GHz, the 6 core might get to 4.4 GHz or something, assuming heat is the major limiting factor.

That thing about the chips adjusting their performance based on the cooling due to the vast amount of sensors was also very cool.

Also that SenseMI stuff is very interesting, sounds like the chips have some ability to learn how to run applications faster over time or something??

Need to wait for benchmarks tho!

would be nice just to see actual benchmarks.why would you have a event then not show any of substance.that screams to me tbh.

if it was that good they would have shown them.but instead benchmarks on blender.LOL.

While the video looked promising I will be waiting until it's on sale and been reviewed independantly before coming to any conclusion. I really do hope it's as good as they promise this time.

i think with only the 8core chip to show off and no boost finished yet they did the right kind of tests to show it off

the gaming side of it was pretty bad like always but i given up hope of them doing that right >.<

To those wondering why the full details and pricing weren't revealed, they don't want to show their hand before launch. Pretty standard in any industry.

if AMD can match intel 6900k performance and ryzen is released at around $350 for the 8 core 16 thread then intel are in trouble. the new motherboards from AMD will probably be a lot cheaper than what intel has to offer. im hoping for 6900k performance for less than the cost of a 6700k system. if AMD can pull this off then 50% market share wont be unrealistic.

about time the greedy fat *******s at intel had some competition. for far too long intel have been greedily taking advantage of the fact that they have no competition and thats why they have inflated prices.

if vega lives up to they hype then AMD will do really well in 2017.

I hope AMD do some serious price gouging on both the cpu and gpu market, Intel has crazy high profit margins so that wont be too hard to do.

People expect far too much from AMD and expect them to basically give it away for free.

I'm all for a massive shake up in price/performance. But be reasonable.
6900K performance for i7 6770K money is not a reasonable demand.

Agreed, I'm sure they will undercut the Intel 16 thread chip by a fair margin (they made a point of saying the Intel chips price tag a couple of times)

But they will want to wait until realease to give final pricing. That way putting Intel on the back foot (if thee zen part does in fact compete with Intel high end stuff in real tests)

It sounds like their avfs system which whilst incorporated in carrizo, tonga and fiji is actually disabled and a workaround uses predetermined p-states.
It sounds like amd still are programming this system, which at such a late stage is a little worrying.

unreasonable for whom? intel?

no one will force you to buy it at that price.

time to be realistic.:p rub those eyes.wake up.6900k performance for less than a 6700k system lol.

People put expectations on AMD that are unreasonable for them to meet.
Then they'll do it every single product launch.

Same crap every time.

We've heard "This will be AMD's year" every year basically since I've been on this forum.

wont be the first time AMD have made intel slash their prices so they can compete, dont worry the money wont come out of your pocket. Stop acting like you are intels CEO.

Intel will just do what they did in the past the last time AMD threatened their monopoly...Intel will just resort to criminal activity and bribe OEMs with billions of kickback dollars just as they did last time and we're convicted in multiple courts of law around the world. There's no telling where AMD would be right now had Intel not broken the law

This is a big deal with the xeon chips and all the multiple cores. One count goes up the other goes down mostly for stability considerations with server chips. Would be nice if all possibles were unlocked and just waiting to be used with the end user deciding whats stable or not
