*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

4ghz seems a pretty good stock clock for an 8c/16t... Though my interest depends on per-thread performance too. Will be interested what the 6/12 and 4/8 chips can do.

Which probably depends on whether the smaller versions are intentionally made to be smaller, and thus good silicon, or whether they're all failed 8/16s with bits of the die locked off and lower frequencies :P

(Which makes me wonder if all i5s are failed i7s...)

They are - in fact at one point, some of the Core i3 CPUs during the Haswell era might have been failed Core i7 chips.

Edit!!

I assume quad core Core i5 chips not the special dual core ones.

Well I hope the 8c/16t will be around £400 that will clock to 4.5 Ghz on a £100 board, even then I'll struggle with upgrading considering the old 3570k still is up to the task, only struggles with BF 1 slightly and I'd like to be faster with Handbrake. We will see what it's like when some guys here get them and leave their thoughts, I might be convinced but I've seen 6800k go for £280 on MM which would be just as good.

if they have really good yields they just break i7s to make i5s... I like to imagine that there's some poor guy sitting in the Intel factory with a hammer and nail.... i7... "dink!" ... i5... :p

i don't think people with OC'ed 4770K i7's and upwards will switch that easily.
At this point unless the 8c/16t ryzen OC's to around 4.5-4.8 with respectable voltage, the only people upgrading will be the ones that need cores more than speed.

I know a few people on these boards with 4770k have already said if the performance is even just comparable they will upgrade for more cores.

Add to that the twitch people on 4770k and older have to upgrade to something just because etc...

Anyhow if those prices are anywhere within £30 of being accurate and the performance is there, AMD will shift a ton of chips

I'm in this group. If ryzen can match my 4790 in single core performance I'll buy it for more cores. Streaming and editing. Though a little disappointed that it looks like we're not getting ITX motherboards at launch. So likely be waiting even longer :(

Yeah. If it can OC to match a single thread performance of my 4.7GHz 4770K then I will definitely consider it in the near future for the extra cores :)

Not had an all AMD system for a long time :(

What are some of you guys wanting a core monster for.

Mostly into gaming here, highly suspect nothing good will happen past the 4 core ones for that.

4 Core just sounds so old now. It has to be at least 6 cores.

TBH,as long as a 4C/8T Ryzen CPU or Ryzen APU this year can hit reasonable clockspeeds as stock it should do the job. We used to be able to get Xeon E3 CPUs with HT for under £200,which means we should have 4C/8T CPUs at £230 to £240 at todays exchange rates.

Now,that Intel close that loophole you need to spend £300ish to get a 4C/8T Intel CPU and the C232 chipset based motherboards are not cheap for the current Xeon CPUs meaning any price reduction going with one is negated.

The sad thing is Intel have themselves to blame - if they had not locked out the 4C/8T Xeon E3 CPUs out of normal consumer motherboards,Intel would have had 4C/8T CPUs for around £230 to £240 right now.
