*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Been skim reading as the thread is moving too fast to keep up so apologies if this has already been asked, but is the whole range going on preorder or is it just the top end ones? (Or does no one know yet?)

Just the 3 8core CPU's I believe first. It would be nice to know when the rest of the line up is due though

dg? :o

Price performance, for overclocking, probably. For stock the 1700X is only $70 more and at 95W stock likely maintains much higher clocks under 8-16threads of heavy loading, though in gaming that 3.64Ghz on the 1700 within 65W is down right amazing.

It's also possible(though i think improbable) that the -X chips actually are binned and work much better at higher voltages and overclock further. If that turned out to be the case and say the 1700X overclocks on average 400Mhz or something better than the 1700, then $70 extra isn't bad, more so if it comes with a better cooler as well.
:) :) :) Sorry man! I'm on mobile, poor excuse but that's all I've got! Sorry dm.

It makes financial sense to only release the top end ones first. People wanting the cheaper ones might be tempted to spend more for the sake of waiting a month or so.

Woppy101 im replacing 5820k with 1700/1700X cause im an AMD person and no upgrades for X99 platform after BW-E turned out to be well **** :/

Notice at 3:20 he says got it to 5.14ghz with the help of liquid nitrogen and a whole lot of voltage. By whole were talking 1.85v.

Still at the price and performance its looking to be, many wont even bother with overclocking anyway.

91.6 vs 112 seconds for the multitasking... yeah, super close.

The 6800k took 22.5% longer, it was 22.5% slower while costing $100 more, or about 30% more. Not destroying there, almost identical performance, almost identical price, almost identical performance/value ratio.

Also the AMD system had only 16GB of DDR4 and the Intel system had 32GB if I heard what Linus said was right.

AMD really making it hard for resellers and Vendors to promote a new product. In theory all thats keeping a buyer to a brand is what they went last with . Does make it a fair playing field but getting your money off you before reviews comes out is just aweful in my view

Unless your doing editing where you might benefit. You'd be better off keeping your money and buying a 1080/1080Ti if its a gaming rig.

Seriously? you just come to troll this thread? why bother man... if your not even interested in buying then why come troll? if you are interested then either wait for reviews for your particular area of interest, or take the gamble, but why come whine about it?

Some people just have to find a negative in every damn thing it seems..

What on earth are you banging on about?!

Did you even think before posting?!

Damn. I hope that does not mean it will struggle to get 4.5GHz on water then.

All of these bang for buck comparisons to 6900K are a bit meaningless, it's not like Intel are going to keep current prices once they have competition.

I don't mind even if they're not great clockers as long as they give good, competitive performance NOW. Just leaves more to come from the Zen refreshes and updates. AMD have already said they're expecting to have proper performance improving refreshes so if they can tweak to improve clocks and IPC why not? Helps them keep up.

At the end of the day, you seem to be getting a lot of performance for your money. 5.14GHz under liquid nitrogen means they're not extreme clockers...but note they did break a record with it! We may also see Silicon mature with time as we have with the RX480s etc.
