*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

A little disappointment with gaming performance but it seems to make sense at least.

However I think this is also good news. Ryzen seems to be excellent at everything other than gaming. But this isnt necessarily an issue with the CPU, what this means is once the average Joe has more cores in their PC and DX12 takes of properly gaming will catch up to start working better with more cores. It's a good sign, but still looks like for the short term a 77000k is a better gaming cpu.

Most of the new intels are barely an improvement on the 2600k either. I'm only on skylake because my old motherboard crapped out and couldn't find a replacement =/

To be honest. Going from an SB core to a Kaby core can give a rather large core for core performance boost.

Not 5 years worth albeit.

Performance does seem hit and miss - in some reviews it is more competitive and in some others its not.

SMT causing performance regressions in games is a tad worrying though.

Usual caveat of threaded performance in games, hopefully that will come eventually. Seems we are always waiting.

Does look a tasty CPU for server/productivity though.
i wouldnt hope for too much improvement. bf1 for eg shows its getting creamed in mp. thats one of the most modern best catered for multicore games.

Oh....

Cancelled my 1800x pre-order, doesn't seem like it overclocks at all really and its not better binned than the 1700. Very good if you are on a dated system and can use the cores though. I'm running a 4790K at 4.9 and had the upgrade itch get the better of me.

Its weird when you think about it, the fury gpu series barely overclocked and now ryzen doesn't seem to have much in the way of clocking potential. Overclocking is obviously a bonus but its surprising that both their gpu's and cpu's don't seem to offer much in that respect.

Seems to do well in everything but games.... in games its really not good at all, what is it with AMD chips and games?

Looks like a standard AMD launch - rush something out half finished.

You would think they would learn by now!! :p

AMD.AMD never changes.

Well its brand new so bound to have some teething issues. If what was said earlier about motherboard manufacturers initially not being all that interested then changing their minds when better samples appeared they're part of the problem. Probably could have been in much better shape if they had got the thumb out.

Am I the only person not expecting an 8 core to be the king of gaming?

Still performs great for the price from what I'm seeing, it's still half the price of the 6900k remember.
