*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

The inconsistency between the big review sites who all received identical hardware from AMD leads me to believe that things they did on their side affected the results, they should have all be exactly the same really. Wonder how many of them for instance actually did a fresh windows install for each hardware configuration.
spent a lot of time reading leaks and snippets just thinking i didn't get that, i got that, got that, not that. :D

pretty much none of the reviewers had the luck pc wise like i seem to. But then i suppose i don't care if i break it.

1700 seems to like taking a thrashing 1800x not so much

This is a rehash of my other post pretty much but sums up the current situation of Ryzen

1) Many reviews were done on non fresh installs of Win, infact some where straight hardware swaps.
2) Many reviews were not done on updated bios
3) Many reviews were not done with High Performance mode, HEPT disabled or SMT disabled
4) Many reviews were done on the Asus Motherboard, which it now seems is exceptionally flakey
5) Ryzen has Bios fixes and Windows patches to come to fix issues, including Thread priority, SMT Scaling, Memory stability
6) There are numerous Ryzen videos if you bother to look that show it competing with 7700k in real world scenarios, this is what matters, not artificially gimped scenarios that are never going to happen for the majority of users.
7) All of Intels CPU releases were flawless
8) Many games are coded towards Intel hardware, its a fact, due to the state of the market and AMDs inability to perform

I lied about one of those above points.

Personally i would not waste money on a 1800x or a 1700x these are leakier parts and as such run a lot hotter and are above the efficiency and optimal curve for these processors, the sweet spot seems to be the 1700 with around 3.9 - 4ghz clocked manually, with currently SMT disabled and a few windows tweaks.

Ironically with it setup correctly its within touching distance of the 7700k in many many games, once they fix the SMT issue and get some other stability and performance fixes in, i can see this chip being even better, infact i see it as the go to chip.

Agree... I knew before the pre order that the 1700 was the one to go for

So does anybody know just how wide spread the use of the Intel compilers in software / games ect ?

I'd like to see dedicated thread, would make it easier to get the information people want know and suggestions for things for owners to check out.

I am quite intrigued by this, as we use it at work I could try and figure out a way to detect it if it's not already been done by someone. But you'd probably have to decompile the executable and/or dll's.

Scramz can you tell us what parts you bought, and what you have done so far, ie updated motherboard bios, manually clocked ram, changed any bios settings etc...

Any info would be good, also is this in a new machine or replacing existing stuff, did you benchmark anything prior to rebuild? what are you doing with the machine? if gaming would you be happy to try a few different tests if people would like to submit requests? :)

it seems like ryzen is going to be great, its just not right now, which if ur looking for a system now leaves u in a pickle, so im pickled, basically.

but the socket life, that bit draws me in

I can do this all this at a cost.... Only joking.

I haven't adjusted anything in the bois yet, I am installing Windows first then I will go in and start playing. I will update later today ;)

EDIT: I also have to get some work done today haha!

OcUK put the wrong postcode on my CPU delivery - or at least it seems to have become corrupted in the "delivery address" records so I'm told it will be here around 3pm but I've just had a "we carded you whilst you were out" text so where it is and whether/when/if it will turn up is anyones guess right now.

I cleaned out my PC last night - removed the mobo/skylake/h80igt/fans and installed the new mobo/h110i - went through about 20-25 wet-wipes to remove all the dirt/dust/fluff - just need the cpu now.
