*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Low leakage = better power consumption and thermals
High leakage = better overclocking

Thats the theory, in reality often the low leakage part is better for overclocking because while they may not clock out right as high its much easier to keep the power and thermals in check.

Better overclocking on extreme cooling since the latter can take higher voltage.

On air,lower leakage is better.

It basically means the R7 1700 is the star of the show.

Once AMD can get SMT working better in games, and say another 6 to 12 months down the line with a more mature process node,Ryzen has very good potential indeed.

Having said that once the R5 1600X drops,I hope AMD tells reviewers to bench with SMT off, since I think that will be fairer for Ryzen as a whole.

The 1700X & 1800X serves a purpose for people who don't want to clock. I just feel they priced them so far apart that it doesn't make enough sense.

Yeah, apologies, that's what I meant, thought about editing or trying to reword but....effort. :P

I'm sure when people get their hands on AIO and some serious water cooling, they (1700x and 1800x) will overclock more than the 1700. (fingers crossed anyways)

To my knowledge, the reviews only used provided aftermarket air coolers.

I hope by the time the 1600X drops Windows will get a RyZen patch and we wont need to worry about SMT.
Remember Intel had the same problems with games and SMT?

Some are using AIO however they are not necessarily the best setup. The Nocuta nh-d15 for instance is often better than AIO's and no one as you say has done a full custom loop. I personally however still don't see the 1800X going much further than the 1700 in either situation tbh. That is purely gut feeling on what we are seeing though.

And no worries, just handy to clarify when people come to reading otherwise that is how miss-information starts :)

Yep I think that will happen, I understood that was likely to be the 30 days from now patch AMD noted. I still say in the tests that are gaming performance tests at proper resolutions it's all fine. They just don't have the legs the higher GHz allow of the 7700K which will be solved over time as is being suggested the node improves.

I would think based on this and where we are in a years time when Ryzen+ drops and developers are more on board with it all we will see a lot more.

Yeah, but the response by AMD was weird - it needs to be optimised for in games?? Surely its more an issue with the Windows scheduler than the games themselves??

AMD PR was saying it wasn't a Windows scheduler issue but one devs needed to handle!! At times I wonder if AMD PR makes things sound worse than they are?? Hopefully it isn't as bad.

It could still be that the Devs haven't worked on optimising how they use the Windows scheduler with the multicore/thread system. It is shown with CA and their Total War games which even on 4C/8T systems have issues compared to it on just 4C/4T. This needs devs to still optimise to make sure the scheduler from Windows is running right from their engine for the number of available core/threads shown.

That was my understanding.

There is a windows update to help but some also is needed by devs to get things working.

Ok, I've just checked my order on the website, and now it says "Sent/Ready for collection"

No dispatch email received yet though, so I have no idea whats going on.

The only reason I'm posting this is because I think it's wrong that those with pre-orders have been left out. There needs to be an element of trust that those with pre-orders are given priority in my opinion...

Hmm i ordered my Asus crosshair mobo way before that as well, consider me pretty miffed with OCuK right now.....what is the point in pre-orders if the queue system obviously doesn't work!

Update:- I phoned OCuK and they said they had only sent out Hero orders up to 22/23 of Feb. Kinda made me feel like I was a liar even though I said there was a picture of a order made on 3/3/17 being dispatched on the forum.

@Gibbo can you look into this if possible?

check your order on the website. Mine is showing as dispatched now, even though I haven't received the email notification yet

Checked but it's still showing as in process. Got a full build on order but i'll just have to wait it out I guess, but it could be a while if the queue system isn't working properly.
