*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

How's the other ASUS Crosshair users getting on?
Have a usb stick with the bios you want on it appropriately renamed handy to update the bios. Wouldn't post without it with me, not an major issue just something nice to know.

Currently sitting at 3.9Ghz @ 1.325v with the ram at 2666 (5803 bios allows for 2800 on my sticks but the next drop down option is 2900). Had the RAM step up its speed every bios update so far tbh.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ It does seem a bit too good to be true.

Edit: this post is regarding those game bechies a coupla posts ago.

Christ, I've got the upgrade itch big time and I only bought my cpu/mob/ram about 6 weeks ago, if that.

I don't understand the scrutiny.
That review was positive :p

Ppl being overcritical really, clear enough that Ryzens being tested in disadvantage atm.The only way is up for them, but still expect them being slower 5-10%( in older games defly) vs top i7s.Years ago when synthetics and real gaming tests were miles apart in results it wouldn't surprise you, but looking at Ryzen's tests now, you can't get rid of the feeling something is fishy here. Btw I recon we shouldn't underestimate importance of cores in today's environment anyway, any 4+ cores computer user will tell you it is much more comfy machine to use, would compare it to having more rams in the system (you can't really put your finger on it,but it feels better machine). In 2600k,Bulldozer days trying to bring "8 cores" to the mainstream was a "bit early", but this time I bet it is bung on time.

p.s: Few years ago had Bulldozer 8150 oc to 4.6 and was playing (badly optimized mechwarrior online) before the patches for FX were introduced and had about 20-30 fps less than similar clock 2600k users, but once our team got into competitive scene and start playing cws (league matches), one of the requirements was to record the demo and after some testing we realized that only FX systems (did hear rumors that Xeon users did ok too) were capable of doing it without dropping to less that 20 fps in heavy engagements. So here you go gents, real life scenario ages (6 years?) ago, sure in our days those heavy multitasking scenarios are happening more often. Conclusion: go for more cores if you can afford it :D.

That doesn't seem right. My 7700k operates at 30-40% even with my 1080 maxed. Take that screen grab not only with a pinch of salt but disregard it!

Mate how can you argue with RAW gameplay footage?? Its not like these pointless slides is it, that By the way need to drop of the face of this planet. Give me Raw side by Side gameplay any day of the week.

edit
btw its my screen grab :p

Yes. 5~ years of support. Thats one of the big draws to AM4.

Thanks this seems to be the most important thing over and above everything else for me. Pretty amazing thing to do.

That's just pulled out of absolute thin air.

There's absolutely no guarantees.

AMD stated they will use the AM4 platform up to 2020 after that we can presume they'll start using an updated platform so it's about 3 years max.

Lisa Su stated in 2015 that Zen would last at least 3 to 5 years on the same platform, starting with Zen , then Zen+ , then a further development.

Unlike Intel who change chipsets when they change CPU`s (of recent) AMD have allways historically kept sockets around for several cpu generations. Yes the occasional `blip` can be identified - FM1 for example , but previously and subsequently , multiple cpu technology for the same socket.
That may be true but in 2017 AMD said AM4 will remain the main platform up to 2020 which gives us a possible 3-4 year window as we do not know when in 2020 it might be replaced, It was one of the questions asked in a reviewers video where they were at a show where we all got to see loads of AM4 motherboards for the first time. It wasn't that long ago.

CPUs have been ahead of the game for years with almost any overclocked i5 pushing any gpu along perfectly fine. There was no need to optimise for more cores. Now its starting to turn the other way again with graphics cards getting more powerful the developers may need to start squeezing more from the CPUs.

Just to separate it from the other thread which focus on WHICH AMD:

Are you guys suggesting 7700k or R7 for a mainly (but not only) gaming build?
I know there will be different opinions but i have such a tremendous itch to buy something new thus I have to decide next week (my current pc goes to my sister then).

Greetings from Vienna.

Is there a spreadsheet or something to log speeds and voltages per SKU?

There's one on reddit but not sure if I can post the link here...

Booted to Windows, there she is, 8 cores / 16 thread hotness xD

All fine so far, very nippy around desktop, just ran virus test. Blazed through it so fast. Would I miss those 10 extra FPS VS a 7700K? Na of course not, over %100 faster in other apps though, that is a good trade off imho :D

I'm just giving you my experience. My 7700k barely gets used at the same frame rate you displayed.

Even my old i3 4130 put in an ok performance and my i5 4570 and i7 4790k had zero issues.

Are there any benches floating around yet pairing Ryzen with AMD gpu's? I'm curious as most of the reviewers seemed to have been using 1080's. Be interesting to see if there is any synergy with Polaris for example?

If I was buying a cpu etc to do a gaming build today I'd be buying Ryzen.
It's likely to last longer thanks to the extra cores and it's likely to stream better for the same reason.
