*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

cancelled my motherboard and cpu with overclockers andbought from somewhere else where they had stock of the 1800x and pre-ordered the msi gaming pro carbon which should be in stock on friday so i should have the board sat or monday
ive got corsair vengeance 16gb (2x8gb) pc4 25600c16 3200mhz dual channel ram but on the specs for the board its says it supports upto 3200mhz (oc) ,does the (oc) mean i have to overclock it to reach them speedsbit of a noob question but im clueless on memory and timings and stuff

I understand the premise of that, but there is really no extra strain going from 60 degree to 70 degree. If you was at 75 degree now and going up to 85-90 degree I would certainly agree but there no reason not to get it running at 4.0GHz @ 70 degree with no more than 1.55V from what I can see with anything provided warranty and support wise.

Anything below 1.37v, according to below, prevents degradation. I see no point in putting an extra 0.1v for the extra heat and possible degradation for 100Mhz. If true of course.

Holly cow. Mate that's absolutely amazing! Also AMD advices to stay bellow the 1.37v for 24/5 on Ryzen CPUs not to suffer long term degradation.
By the way, have you tried the stock cooler which blows the air downwards cooling the VRMs?

You reckon there's any chance I will ever by able to run my 32Gb (2 x 16Gb) Corsair LED 3000@C15 RAM at near native speed?

Looks like I'll probably end up sending this RAM back; shame really as I only paid £200 for it brand new last week; it's shot up in price since!

Gibbo has stated 1.55V with warranty cover, anything over voids it.

So I don't see any reason not to take that as max we should go too. I know Joker was told by AMD 1.365v is recommendation but I don't think that is the same as safe volts. But in that case I can understand why you would then sit at 3.9GHz :)

Thanks for input.

Hard to see in the future but I would suggest it will come in the future but could be weeks or months depending on Bios updates and validations etc.

I've seen a frametime graph .. let me see if I can find it.

Here you go :

Pick the game in the dropdown
While nice, the problem is that they run their benchmark on a clean install. The only thing which overwhelms the 4C/8T i7-7700K is BF1 multiplayer and then only in DX11. What might be far more interesting would be if they had something else (streaming being the obvious thing) running at the same time.

But there are thousands of people who will be playing BF1 in DX11 on a 7700K and so the fact it is overwhelmed is still relevant when the alternative priced AMD CPU doesn't have said issue. Even if we are only talking one game it points in a direction where newer games will suit the 1700 accordingly.

I generally just watch all of this stuff unfold from the sidelines as I don't feel I am really knowledgeable enough to comment but this has been the weirdest PC hardware release I have ever seen.

Some things that someone like myself, an enthusiast but no expert, has taken from it.

Comparisons. I have no idea why people are getting bent out of shape because the Ryzen doesn't beat the 7700k in games. None. Surely when you look at it even a layman like me can see that it is an unrealistic expectation. The fact that it is a similar price is not relevant as it's not competing in that sector. It compete's and in some areas beats CPU's up to twice its cost and that is something amazing surely? If the 1600 comes out and is priced at 7700k prices with similar results then that I could understand.

Teething problems. Doesn't this go with the territory? All we need to do is wait a bit for the MB manufacturers and whoever to get some updates out. I'm desperate to give a 1700 a go but it's not the end of the world. Just wait.

General drama. There are posters who are creating an overly negative atmosphere where there probably shouldn't be one by posting the same thing over and over again until people either listen, or are so fed up with it they just nod. It's akin to football. X pundit says "Club in Crisis" because a player doesn't shake the coaches hand as he is subbed and before you know it it's everywhere. It's the same posters regurgitating the same posts around the CPU section until it sticks.

Anyway as you were. :D

I think the thing is that we know the 1600 will be less than 7700K but will only clock similar to that of the 1700 from all accounts so far and what AMD are even suggesting. With that I think it is safe to say that it should be a fine CPU for the price.

And I would expect that whatever the results are for the 1700 over the next few months will be similar basically to the 1600. The things which will help is of course Bios being updated, W10 getting patch for it etc.

And following some reviews that seem to have the Gigabyte stuff running it also seems much much closer to the 7700K in 1080 & 1440p

I don't know why but amongst all the madness sensible posts like this stand out

Sure man you're not wrong in your perception, there's a bit more meat to the bone you've missed out on though.
It all looks fixable though, but you have to be delusional to accept that all is dandy right now.
For myself I can't stand a few posters who cannot take any negativity on Amd, they are just as bad as the downplayers. The r5 will be the sweet spot

I have the same ram but 16gb 2x8gb and on my b350 tomahawk I cannot get above 2400, it just refuses to post. Although this is higher than some have been reporting.
Bear in mind i am on bios 1.0 and have only had 30 mins of playing.

Just ordered a MSI B350 TOMAHAWK, had a CH6 pre-ordered but after all the posts about bricked boards and the possibility of a new v2 revision I cancelled it. I had to get an AM4 compatible cooler to last until corsair gets the AM4 bracket out, did not know which to get so I when with an ARCTIC Freezer 13, hope it works ok.

I have a nice R7 1700 sat in a box waiting on my board, starting to get tetchy now!

On a secondary note when the actual competitor to the 7700K, the R5 1300 4c/8t unlocked at $175/£165, and it's not as fast, once clocked to 4GHz, what are these moaners going to have to main about then? ;)

Its quiet a nice board for the price, but as will all of them its not without its bugs/quirks. Its all part of the fun though.
