*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Its happy to sit at 4ghz 1.4v tho i think right? what kinda temps does it idle and max at with that cooler @ 4ghz?

Idles in the low 40s on High Performance power mode so no downclocking. Maximum temps loading it up with Folding@Home was 63c and that really does give a CPU a solid workout.

Edit: I've actually dropped back to 3.6ghz on stock volts as I'm really not going to need those extra 300mhz any time soon

^ great achievement... Really force the last bit of performance from the Cpu lol

Hey 8 Pack, do you know the official thermal limits and voltage limits for these chips? whats the safe voltage for say a 4ghz permanent overclock for every day use and gaming, if using decent cooling like high end air or a decent AIO?

Just benchmarked dirt rally, the rest of my stuff is downloading but in this there is no difference compared to my haswell xeon the 1700 replaces.
On the stock cooler (waiting for my bracket from corsair) and only seems to boost to 3.2ghz with 2400 on the ram. With a gtx 1070.
Xeon:
avg 97.16
min 72.18
max 155.18

1700
avg 95.74
min 72.93
max 152.32

So on this game with a 500mhz disadvantage is keeping up with haswell. Whilst installing windows updates and downloading the heaven benchmark :)

Notua cooler arrived and fitted so thought I'd give mine a workout.

Similar results as @Scramz 3.9ghz at 1.31 volts then a big bump over 1.4v needed for 4ghz

Realbench 10 runs of only H264, that will let you know if you are stable or not :D

I am finding it hard to understand why people are getting high idle temps when overclocked. The CPU's frequency and volts clock down when in idle, my 3.9Ghz idles in the 20c's. Even reviews are quoting idle and OC'd give off a lot of heat at idle.

I am experiencing different, I idle the same low temps on balanced and performance mode. Even though my cores are stuck at 3.9Ghz on performance the power usage is low.

Maybe different for others but I am idling in the mid 20's/low 30c on both settings.

I will run a test and post screens.

@ Scramz are you actually clocking the processor from within the bios or are just using software? That would explain things a little. As your clock is after windows has loaded and the tool which I would prob never used is adjusting in some way rather than having a fixed vcore set in bios?

I am not using fixed volts for my OC, I dont like to :)

That is why you are having these results. Although you are overclocking it is after windows has loaded not prior set in bios. Without seeing how this tool is working it maybe a better way to improve power though I would ordinarily never use such a tool. I have always set in bios as per normal overclocking. Normally hate installing manufactures software that does this sort of overclocking, but if it actually does help power i might have a look see.

4fps difference vs a 5ghz kaby lake not bad! Although i bet it would be different if paired with a better GPU.

If they were at the same clock speed I doubt we'd see any difference in the game as well.

Here's hoping R5 can manage to up the base clock speed a bit more so gamers can be happy.

I would like if people could test the 6900K and R7 head to head in these newer games as well.

Yeah, afterall it is the x99 series that these r7's are aimed at. Not z170/z270
