*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

There's a very good chance the 4core will offer better performance.
Although, even then the 8 cores are doing really well, especially in Windows 7. Up to a 13fps increase on minimums alone.

As mentioned in that thread it makes sense, given that's similar to the Intel Core series back then, which was the primary CPU spec for Windows XP and 7.

Windows 10 just needs to handle things correctly, and Ryzen should do better; and that doesn't even include SMT dropping around 10-20% performance in some games as well. That's a separate issue that needs addressing.

Agree i am getting much better performance in win 7 than 10 i have to test more ...and i would have if it wasn't for these damn asus boards taking my time up trying to sort them ..now that i have a tomahawk here which i only got this morning i can now test more ...

I have a Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 (mATX) on the way that should get to me Monday, so I'll be able to play with that and see how it works with my 1700 and TridentZ 3200 cl14 RAM.

I think I'll run it with Windows 7 for a bit until more of the Windows 10 performance bugs are worked out.

There is nothing wrong with Windows 10 OS.

Was it working before you placed in the case or is it a DOA

Stupidly did not check outside of case first! however have now removed and can confirm no boot no matter what dim or PSU l use.

LED for CPU is lit then goes out. If l remove ram then RAM LED is lit, if no GPU fitted does not detect that and no GPU led lit, even tho it should, so suspect duff board.

Based on comments from people comparing performance between Windows 7 and Windows 10, I'll go with Windows 7 for now.

The other benefit is that if I install my new copy of 10 on the computer and then find out I need to exchange the board for something else I avoid the hassle of trying to reactivate 10 on new hardware. I'm not setting this up as my primary PC yet, so I'm fine with the idea of running on 7 at least for my initial testing.

You would've thought AMD would work with Microsoft beforehand to get this sorted :p.

Saw this post on Reddit which may seem to bring up a good point about affected gaming performance as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/5ybrxn/ryzen_7_is_actually_behaving_like_a_dual_4c8t/

Because the CPU is made from 2 CCX, it could be functioning more like a dual 4 core CPU, and Infinity Fabric is not fast enough to exchange data between the two CCX, which can affect gaming workloads due to the threads being dependant on each other. Hopefully Microsoft will sort the scheduler out to better know which cores in which CCX to use.

Which then makes me wonder... will the 4c/8t Ryzen offer better performance in lightly threaded CPU dependant games?

Thx for the info

IF... the 4c 8t parts are one CCX only, which they might not be.

AMD could bin the line making top end models 1 CCX with X cores active and a lower tier model with 2 CCX and X cores active, kind of like how Athlon chips had cache disabled

When you say it like this, i can see where you are going but then it feels like you do not have a lot of confidence in the AMD product.
Yes I agree chase the price for performance but when you are going this far I rather spend the extra and just do Intel and Nvidia and get it over and done with.

Pretty good video :)

The specs of the ASRock AM4 boards seem really good.

Will be interesting to see what 8 Pack thinks of the board

8pack wrote here and on the Asrock board that the Taichi is solid mobo with good overclocking.

I will grab one when there is stock at ocuk which is unknown atm.... Even if so other some UK etailers have it due tomorrow

It's less that I don't have confidence in AMD, and more that after hearing all the stories of people having issues with motherboards and RAM that I want to make sure my hardware is stable before I put 10 on it. If I knew I wouldn't have a hassle with activations then I probably would, but a month ago I had various problems getting 10 reactivated on a computer that the license was already tied to after a reinstall, so I'm skittish.

As soon as I know the hardware surrounding the processor isn't going to melt on me, I'll be slapping 10 into it and get my water loop constructed to use it as my primary PC. I'm also not concerned with price/performance, as I can pretty much afford whatever I want to get, I just kinda want to go back to AMD and like the idea of troubleshooting issues as they come up (as long as they're not hardware failure related) until things smooth out a bit.

Can't you just install it without a product key and run it for 30 days or whatever as an evaluation?

I've never had an issue re-activating Windows 7. If the auto-reactivation fails, the automated phone system always worked for me. I've even used the OEM product key from a Dell laptop to activate a random desktop computer before...

With Windows 10 I assume it is a bit more of an issue because of the lack of a physical product key?

That was part of it, as it was my free upgrade from 8.1. In Windows 10 it doesn't have an option for you to activate over the phone (that I can find) unless you run 'SLUI.EXE 4', but I was having an issue where that wouldn't run for me on my system. I had to do another fresh install before I was able to get it to run, then go through the phone support to get it activated, but it was still more of a pain than I was used to.

But since Armageus brought up that I can just run with the trial without activating, which I hadn't thought of, I'll likely do that until I know my hardware is working fine.
