*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

I wish Ryzen 7 1700 had a bigger perfromance increase over my i7 4790k, right not even wyth Threadripper coming out there isn't really anywhere to go for Devils Canyon owners. Maybe Intels Coffee Lake but Im expecting the prices to be too high.

even the new intel stuff is not going to have a MASSIVE jump in performance in current games... where you see the biggest benfits is highly threaded applications.

There is very few games out there that utilise a full 4 cores let alone 8

now we know am4 is supposed to support 7nm ryzen cpu's down the line. the more important question is what motherboards will. has it been confirmed if the x370 will or havent amd said either way yet ??

Too early to tell but I'm sure all motherboards will support it, might just need a BIOS update

thats what id hope at least on the higher end boards, just pricing a ryzen build unless coffee lake is a lot better than expected so trying to weigh up possible upgrades down the line.

If you're talking current games, yeah. If you need cores, lots of fat ones, Ryzen is much quicker than the 4790K. Hopefully with Intel having to follow suit with increased core count (dual core in 2017 :p), game devs will find ways to make better use of them.

I'm in the same boat, tbh I feel I've given Intel enough love over the years and want to give AMD a try.

thats the biostar board arrived. seems really solid although not fired it up yet.

interesting the m.2 slot is on the back of the board.... i didnt even expect to have one on a itx

by the looks of it, it should fit. the standoffs actully come with your case not the board.

remeber AMD backplates are quite bulky anyway and the standoffs are designed to accomadate them and it looks as though this is probably not even as thick as that.

very nice design as a m.2 slot isnt something you would expect to get on an itx board as its something you would normally sacrifice for the small form factor so well done biostar for squeezing it in.

True, those backplates are thick. Good luck with the build!

im actully waiting for Ryzen 3 or the APU to build this one. I already have a 7700k machine and this is going to be for the wife, but when the guy above mentioned the biostar board was availble I just had to buy it now as ive been waiting for it to become availble in the UK and considering there was only 1 left as well.

AMD will launch about four SKUs, two 12-core, and two 16-core

Interesting, so no 10 and 14 core chips.

If its anything like Ryzen 7 that might actually work very well, instead of doing a 12 core and then a cheaper 10 core they will just have a cheaper lower clocked 12 core, like the £300 8 core.
It would be awesome if Threadripper started at around £500. that would cause massive disruption to this insanely overpriced section of the market.

£500 for the lower clocked 12 core would be epic but I'm not getting my hopes up. The problem with having a 12 core as your lowest SKU is that Intel are releasing 4 core (albeit crap value) SKUs on their HEDT platform, as well as 6, 8, and 10 core SKUs. They might be forced into that cheaper bracket just by not having lower core count SKUs to sell. Of course a 10 core variant might appear later, although if they're disabling one core per module (a la R5 1600), 9 cores makes more sense than 10.

No one is going to look at the Z270 7700K and think "no, i don't want that, what i want is the same thing with no added features or functionality on a much more expensive X299 platform.

The only reason those 4 core chips exist on the X299 platform is so that reviewers like Toms Hardware can say "yay we managed to find 3 applications that only use one core and Intel win cuz big Mhz"

I completely agree but if Intel offer a 6 core CPU for, say, £350 (possibly wishful thinking), and AMD's cheapest is £500, that might price them out of the lower end of the HEDT market, even though their entry level part has double the cores and offers comparatively better value.

Yeah, and that may not be so wishful thinking, i actually think that is how Intel will combat AMD, i think they will battle them on price in some area's, up to a point, If AMD drop their prices by ##% in response i don't think Intel will follow them that far.

At the end of the day this = cheaper CPU's for everyone, actually the only loser out of all of this are Intel, their pride and margins, thats fine, it wont hurt Intel too much to come off with a bloody nose once in a while.
