*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Whats more poignant about that embarassing video from that Steve Burke (the clues in his name tbh) is he pretty much does all he can to make the tests favour Intel, but the power is just not there for the Intel CPU, admittedly more cores is always going to beat higher clocks and lower core count in this type of test.

I really detest that dude, its so blatantly obvious if you watch his stuff he is so dismissive of AMD and pro Intel / Nvidia and thats not just me as an AMD fan saying it, many people have pointed this out.

Even though he OC'd the 7700k and left the 1700 at stock (seriously, who does that?) the 1700 still won... what i dont get is, if your going to OC one CPU why not both? simply stating "Well the 1700 is going to win, but lets see how the 7700k OC's fares" etc is rubbish, OC them both so you can actually see how much better OC'd the 1700 is? or is he afraid of the result and what Intel will say to him even more?

the guys a moron, end of.

I completely agree, I've said it before that I cannot listen to this guy. He's boring and so pro intel its surprising he gets so many views.

Looks like it. Going to order the cheapest AM4 board available then RMA whatever is dead
That sucks, keep us updated.

Well Asrock A320 board arrived today. Definitely the original motherboard thats dead so I'll get that sent for RMA later, coincidentally my GTX460 had given up too as the new board would boot with no display, nipped out and grabbed the cheapest GT710 I could find and I'm currently posting from the system

Annoying me I cant get my ram over 2933.

Considering either
a. buying some other RAM
b. waiting for bios updates(will there be anymore....)
c. swapping motherboard and ram

......probably a waste money, system runs great anyway....just annoying. :)

Sweet, I wish you a speedy RMA

3200C14@4Ghz vs 3466LL@3Ghz. Ryzen really REALLY likes fast memory, hopefully they can help the situation in Zen2.

Morning all,

I hope you are all enjoying your Sunday!

A question if I may...

I am a gamer, its 99% of my usage on the PC. Do we think Threadripper will see a price dive on the 1800x?

If you look at this artice it says there a number of other Threadripper process to launch in the future. AMDs line up looks very very crowded.

So if the 12 core is $799 (£615) then wont the R9 1955 have to be around what the 1800x is priced at now?

Do we anticipate a price drop on the 1800x in the near future?

I think that is fake. Currently AMD has announce a 16 core and a 12 core. Assuming AMD would announce the 2 highest skus you would have expected a 14 core to be announced not a 12 core. Also the base and boost clocks are all wrong. 3.4/4 for 16 core and 3.5/4 for the 12 core

Ah I think I have found the source I was reading originally:

https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/amd-ryzen-threadripper-specs
There's some more recent true stuff in there, but the list of SKUs is still fake. AMD don't have Zen configurations with nonsymmetric CCX. So for Ryzen 7/5 that means 4, 6 or 8 cores (2 cores would be theoretically possible with 1 core per CCX but is highly unlikely). For Threadripper that means 16 and 12 cores (8 cores also would be possible with 2 cores per CCX - that is 4 cores per die). For EPYC they are doing more SKUs with even an 8 core (1 core per CCX - that is 2 cores per die).
All of this gives the following possibilities:

Having said all of that, I would imagine that the 1800X only really sells to those who don't want to overclock versus the 1700 or 1700X, or those who want the best binned chip to try and reach 4.0 or more. And the 1700 & 1700X must outsell the 1800X by a big margin yet in reviews the Skylake-X 7820 tends to get compared with the 1800X when calculating the value (and a lot of reviewers then ignore the price difference between AM4 and X299 motherboards), so it might make sense for AMD to drop the listed price down to $399.

Just realised that I didn't actually answer your question. I believe that the R7 processors have had price cuts recently. Whether there will be further price cuts, unfortunately only AMD knows the answer to that. NDA is supposedly ending on the 25th; so expect to see the full threadripper line up then at which point we can work out if we are to expect more price cuts.

Edit: Just read your link. (Probably should have done that before posting). Their table is still based off the rumor that was going around a few months back. As far as I am aware we do not know officially how many threadripper SKUs there will be.

Looks like François Piednoël is leaving Intel:

https://www.techpowerup.com/235385/francois-piednoel-quits-intel?cp=4#comments

He was the same bloke who was basically called Ryzen a crap design before launch.

Being a Tech-leader does not mean being a strong minded not listening feared old man, it means enabling the young engineers to be successful, and lead them by example, accept when you are wrong, and enable learning out of it, and always seek the less senior point of views. Being innovating all the time for long period of time is only possible in those conditions. And If your environment or management does not enable that kind of ways, move on!

That's fake. 12 core and 16 core only. AMD cannot chop the CCX in such way to make the 14 cores or the 10 cores. 8 core possibly can be, but pointless.

Does anyone have any issues with ryzen master wanting to reboot the pc after you change settings? First few days i didn't have to do that, then suddenly any change necessitates a reboot. Can't recall if that was before or after i installed the 1 gig amd chipset drivers for the b350m mortar.

Same motherboard as you. Was it asking you to restart or was it not changing anything till you restarted? A couple of my observations.
Did you notice that the chipset drivers are much bigger from msi then they are directly from amd? Dunno why this is.
I wasn't convinced Amd master was evening doing anything. Only gave it a quick go as I though it might save time from rebooting constantly whilst trying out overclocks.
