AMG GT R - Der Tag

Well probably time for an update as I close in on 10,000 miles.....

I have had the car less than 4 months and in that time I have covered 6,000 miles! I have always used my cars and though this is my only car at present I don't really go anywhere much outside of getting in and driving for fun, oh and a mega Scotland escapade. Close to 1,400 miles of the most exciting roads I have ever experienced. Not the NC500, much much better...

Tonight I took time to wash the car properly and I am pleased to say the PPF has done an incredible job of protecting the front. Friends cars have been peppered but mine is pretty much paintwork fresh....though I do have 4 windscreen chips of which 2 will need work, a job for tomorrow.

During the Scotland trip I was able to compare it with other cars, some driven really well and some a little more sedately and I can say it was never found wanting at any point outside of wet roads. It made going fast easy and following a friend who is proper quick in a 650bhp E92 M3 was incredible. Watching his car at close quarters moving around as he was working really hard and mine rock solid. I can see why the car is so fast around a track it is incredible. In August I have and RMA Silverstone GP track day, Shelsley Walsh and likely a closed day or two at the Nurburgring, so can't wait.

Some images from Scotland, starting with 1 of the 2 lorries that brought my friends from London up.

First night parking at St Andrews worried me a little.... "Yea just park it in one of the bus spaces in the public car park by the sea front" got a "WTF" from me.......

I need not have worried as one of the lads had arranged for security to turn up and watch the cars all night! As one of my female friends said....."If Waitrose did dogging"

A few other shots....to come when Imgur stops playing up. There were 12-13 cars in total and it was a fantastic trip with hotels sorted for each night (one of which was rough as a bares bum) and lunch each day (including the finest Indian food I have had for a while and a boat house on a lock epic).

It's another world...I'm very jealous :)

A couple of friends and I have been talking about doing the NC500. Not in such exotic metal of course, but I get the feeling it would be amazing to do in anything.
I will post up the route. We did not do the NC500, we did a far far far better driving route. I have done the NC500, this was MUCH better. If you want to take a steady pace, stop, admire and take it all in at leisure then NC500. If you want to drive and drive at pace (within the law of course.....) then our route. Each day was better than the next and some were turn around and do it again good.

A couple of the chaps did all the hard work, taking a route another friend had done a while back, adding in hotels, transport, flights to and from Scotland, lunch etc and it was just incredible. We had a full itinerary and also used an App that allowed for the route and waypoints to be added so we followed the exact route. I promise if you follow this route you will be amazed by the roads which are just incredible.

Looks like an epic trip! Security for the convoy sounds hilarious, but I’d definitely want peace of mind with that calibre of car! Hope you enjoyed!
St Andrews seems a decent place. There were loads of people there, phones everywhere but all were well mannered and friendly. I personally had 4 different people sitting in my cars drivers seat, taking photos and videos and so did others. Looks on peoples faces when you wave them over and say "dive in" is great. Big part of the ownership experience. There for the grace of God go I etc. I was the kid excited by the fast cars, right of passage if I can let kids, mums and dads get close.

Just a petrol head really. One woman at Balmoral was ace. She came over nearly in tears. "This is my dream car, you can forget all the other cars, the Mercedes AMG GT R is my dream car". In she gets, husband and son "she is mad for them, posters, magazines, made her day you have". Took her phone, videos, pics, she was in her element. Nice to do that, well I think so.

If you can, and aren’t afraid they’re going to damage anything, good for you.

I take it you drove all the way up there? Still amazed you’ve managed to put 6,000 miles on it!
Yes. Left home 8:30am Wednesday, picked my mate up in Cannock, drove to Keel for 10am rendezvous with few other Midlands lads and then we all head up, me leading the convoy at pace but nothing crazy, got to St Andrews around 4ish and in bar around 4:01ish

The cars were....

2 x E92 M3's
1 x Mustang Mach 1
1 x AMG GT-R
1 x McLaren 720S
2 x Ferrari 488 GTB's
1 x 992.2 Turbo S Cab
3 x Ferrari 812 GTS
3 x Lambo Performante (2 x soft tops, 1 x hard top)
1 x Ferrari Portofino
1 x Lambo Urus

Can't beat some inconsiderate parking and two M3s that are way out of their depth :D
Funny but they were the 2 quickest cars on the trip together with me and the 720. We tended to be at the front and having the fastest runs. The owners have several other cars but chose their M3's and they were brilliant. Both are properly set up even if the big spoilers might make them look at bit boy racer.

Looks a good route - we did all the outside and the north and east was a waste of time tbh, after the West coast its just dull! Thats some serious metal there!
The NC500 is all about the west coast really. The east coast is a bit mundane in comparison but this route had no mundane.

Do you mind sharing the app? I've been doing some routes lately with friends but just using Google Maps links and it's not totally reliable. Quite often you'll be half way and despite it being a pre-defined route the traffic will change 1% and give you a shortcut completely breaking the fun.
A Better Route Planner (ABRP)

Starting our NC500 tour in a couple of weeks, were doing it anti-clockwise over8 days, six of us in total, all Jaguars, i shall be the odd one out, undecided if I am taking GR, Aston or 458 still though. :D
Aston in that company would be my shout

Where is this mate? The top photo, will see if were heading there, looks amazing, also I have to say but your car and that Mustang in my eyes are outdoing all the other cars on looks, just seems to me that in those duller colours the supercars don't look well so super......
I can’t quite remember but it was not on the original plan but a local tipped us off. All about the photo opportunity rather that the road to it.
