Amnesia: The Dark Descent

This is so good, just played the demo and it scared the crap out of me :P

£10 on steam is a steal

Agree that it's a great price considering a lot of new games are £20-30 for 10h or so gameplay these days and also read the IGN review they liked it quite a lot.(8.5/10)

At £10 can't really go wrong with a good horror game. :p

anybody else felt that the game was trying to hard to scare you?

Well its quite good but yeah i agree. One problem that Tefal actually touched on.

How the game works going insane into it.

It doesnt do it that well imo. I dont start gibbering, slobbering saliva along the floor and hallucinating just because its dark and i see weird creatures etc.

I think i am prejudiced because i've played Call of Cthuhla NOW that game knows how to do insanity and messed up perception/awareness.

Another problem with Amnesia is, and i hope i am wrong - it seems too familiar to the previous games (Penumbra series) I'm playing penumbra overture atm and whilst it is quite good (still not a patch on Cthuhla) its story isnt gripping me because its entirely told via bits of paper you find.

With regard to how you interact with the environment yeah its cool but for this company its not a new thing in Amnesia (exact same control and interaction in the Penumbra series which is why mebbe this new game might feel formulaic sorta paint by numbers Horror?) - the new thing is the insanity factor which could have been better but its not too bad i guess.

A good Horror Adventure for me is Story + Atmosphere + Art + Direction (bit like director of film?) = Awesomeness. imo the gold standard is Call of Cthulha Dark Corners of the Earth (by now you might have realized i want to have its children :D ). The great thing about CoC:DCOTE is that as well as lots of moments of scary - the whole story was bat*** scary, creepy and messed with ur mind a little. The sound was immense in conveying this as well.

It is only let down slightly because imo there is too much standard combat fps.

The mythos of Cthuhla is a bit freaky too.... when a game is based on something which you know aint real but is told in a way that hey that is scary i'm glad it aint real....it aint real right?
:D

Typical man. Wants to bone it but cant even remember its name. Cthulhu* xD

Really liked this demo. Enjoy lovecraft stories and this did remind me of some of them quite a lot. The more games on the market that do that the better. ******* water monster thing made me jump and run the hell away. Good atmos, good visuals, different gameplay and what could be a great story and its only a tenner. Cant fail even if it turns pants and santa claus chases you whilst molesting teddy bears in his sack.

Call of cthulhu was great but I personally thought Clive Barkers Undying was a better game overall, its a very similar hybrid survival horror fps, have you played it before?. (Don't mix it up with that crappy Jericho :p )

Can't wait to play this though, I've been dieing for another Horror after completing call of cthulhu, so little of these types of games around.

Undying is mainly a FPS. The shocks usually come from enemies appearing from nowhere yeah? So much like doom 3 fear etc. That is, its that kind of scary.

Not to say that kind of thing isnt scary e.g. Dead Space - dark corridors, weird noises - quite scary :D

For me Call of Cthulhu is nothing like this at all. For me its much more complex (the "fear factor" levels you could say has more depth) and has more depth to the story/characterization. You generally investigate things that are going on, solve puzzles etc. There is an overwhelming sense of dread that permeates and things get worse (sanity wise) the further into the game you get.

Think I might give this one a go, trailers look like good fun and by fun I mean omfgwtfwasthat kinda fun.

Hmm..I dunno. Games that have an 'insanity effect' kind of annoy me. I mean, if you're going insane, you're not going to have a wobbly edge to your vision to let you know, are you?

It should be more a case of seeing a terrifying tentacled monster, and only after you've taken a hatchet to it do you realise it's a traffic warden. Or something :p

Just saw this on Steam, didn't realise it was coming out so soon.

Enjoyed the Penumbra games so have pre purchased it on steam, especially for the price :D

In Amnesia you hide, or you run. You run, or you hide. You run, or you hide.... You hide, or you run.
